Exactly, Don. One of the anomalies of Oz politics is the disregard for political theatre. Here we 'don' strange clothing as we enter the political arena. Liberals with a capital L are conservative, whether wet or dry, [dry being our term for economic rationalists] and some are Fascist. They shout that they are true liberals, as in the liberalism of Gladstone, but they are by their own definition, either conservative or Fascist.
The mob in Canberra are on par with the Deep South Conservatives of the USA [ala Cheney, Dubya, even David Duke] while the so-called Australian Labor members are actually middle of the road conservatives.
The True Left in Oz are to be found among the Socialist Alliance, Democratic Socialist Party and so forth.
Blair's Labour Govt is considered by us Leftists to be quite conservative as they do not represent the working class any more.
Unforunately for the American scene, the Left has vanished as a political force.
Hope this enunciation is a bit clearer as to the loco situ in Oz.
Seeya Don!
