G. I. Jane tends to be an under-rated film. Too much of the focus is on Demi Moore's shaved head; instead a viewer should consider Viggo Mortensen's brilliant portrayal of the master chief. His performance shows not only his talent as an actor but also that the film is about more than Moore's buff bod.

I have to disagree with the description of the master chief's character as an ass. I'd also disagree with descriptions of the character as misogynistic or sadistic. There are other characters who dislike the idea of a female Navy SEAL because they see her as a feminist symbol or a sexual distraction or causing embarrassment when they have to share the head. But the master chief does not dislike her personally; he wants to demonstrate to her and the others what he thinks is the real threat of allowing women in combat. He describes the problem the Israeli army had with women in combat, demonstrates the extreme physical and mental demands which are required, and shows that rape is a threat which can be used against not only the woman, but the other members of her unit. Viggo's portrayal suggests how complex the master chief is - his first lines are to recite a D. H. Lawrence poem, later he is reading a J. M. Cotzee novel and he keeps pushing Moore even when the other instructors are prepared to back off. The eventual respect he shows to Moore is not a surprise because he recognizes that she has achieved what he thought women couldn't do, including saving his life by hauling a man who weighs more than she does.

For a Viggo fan, this is a movie worth watching for his performance, but it's a good movie in its own right including the climatic battle scene which demonstrates Ridley Scott's talent as a director of action.
