Here's what I think about starting as a newbie in each of the following classes. (Just some general things the help files aren't really helpful about.)

Assassin

I've only ever really played an assassin once. I had great fun, and actually caused some stress in other players (which is ALWAYS interesting). As a newbie class, I think you could do well with this one as long as you never type "kill" (or any of its variations) until you've explored a city, established a cover identity, and maybe found a group of like minded malcontents to hide amongst. Be ready for a LARGE LEARNING CURVE with this class, though. You won't bet good at anything for quite some time (but this shouldn't deter your choice, since all new PCs have this kind of learning curve; I've just found that assassins have a longer one than most).

Durin

AVOID AVOID AVOID. As a new player, just avoid anything that has any association with magick. AVOID!

Merchant

A challenging class for a first time player b/c it often requires equipment that is difficult to find your first time in the world. It also requires a familiarity with lots of strange little commands and actions, but the help files are generally good here. Few classes can make more money quicker than a merchant can. Really, it's like a lisence to mint your own coin when you get good at it. A good class to travel around as (if you can find a more bulked up traveling companion to die in your place, even better). I've always had very rewarding experiences as a merchant. Valuable class.

Ranger

Probably the best class you can start out as if you want to explore beyond the cities of the MUD. Unusually short-lived b/c the world outside the cities is very VERY dangerous, but if you're carefull, and follow my advice about running like a little girl, you can do well as a ranger. Some of the best characters I met when i was just starting out on 4L were rangers, so I've always had an affinity for the guys. Well-rounded class.

Shaman

AVOID!!!!!!!!!! If you play a magicker as your first character, you're just going to be frustrated and die. Avoid like the plague.

Stenmin

Stop. Take your hands off the keyboard. DO NOT TYPE IN THE OPTION TO PLAY A STENMIN. Take a deep breath. Choose something else, anything else. Avoid as a new player. Mostly avoid as an older player. Just avoid. (You'll thank me for it later.)

Theif

Probably the best class if you want to explore the cities of the MUD. Oh, you'll get arrested for doing stuff as a thief, sure (it's the nature of the beast), but you'll have a damn lot of fun doing it...and you might even learn a secret or two. Now there are problems with the class (as there are with many). If you get into a fight as a thief, see my advice about being a little girl and running. You need to run even faster if you're a thief... If you're a newbie, take a few hours off and just walk around the city, looking at stuff. Memorize how the city you're in is laid out. It'll come in handy when trying to find a spot to drop off...umm...that stuff that's not bolted down very well, or to avoid the authorities. And one bit of advice: if all you've done is stolen something usually it's best to just let yourself get caught. In most cities, it's death to run from the guards, but just a trip to the jail for theft. Which would you rather choose?

Warrior

Not the best class for a newbie, which is odd for a MUD. I find it's VERY hard to resist the temptation to use all those nice combat skills if I play a warrior, but maybe it's just me. Note to the new player: combat increases the probability that your character will die. Death being frustrating, I urge you to either choose something else your first time around or to RESTRAIN yourself (a lot better than I can). If you do go warrior, attach yourself as soon as possible to some organization so that you can get on their payroll. Alternately, make friends with some other character and help them out. I've found warriors make GREAT characters to help other people achieve goals, even if it's just traveling alongside someone as they go from city to city.
