A quick overview of your initial race options.

Human

You should start your career on 4L as a human, definitely. Anything else presents language hassles that you JUST DON'T NEED.

Half-elf

Language problem. Enough said. Also, you're a bastard that everybody hates (pretty much). Some people like that kind of thing though, but avoid for your first life b/c of that language thing.

Dwarf

If you choose to start off in a dwarven area (say, Grotto Hold), then you'll do
well as a dwarf. Otherwise...language problem. Avoid.

Elf

Not available in The Four Lands

Troll/Mwellret/Tiefling

The enemy! These are other races you might someday get to play. I've never played any of them (I try to stick to normal things). In general, I'd expect a solitary, lonely existence then a quick, violent death. I could be wrong, of course. Maybe I'll try it out some day and let you know.
