Hmm, there is a swim skill, as for telling where water is, atleast deep water that you can really sink into constructive uses of the 'peer' command can help you such as 'peer east down' (if you believe easterly there may be deeper water for some reason).

The best way to get out of a bad water scenario is to carefully review all your exits and make sure to try them all.
