I come back here once in a great while to see if anybody posts a message...not in a long time, but you never know who might turn in here off the superhighway. Essex Junction...it was a good place to grow up...I had a great childhood here and am thankful for it...some memorable landmarks stand out in my mind...The Tower, the Swiss Chalet and the Indian Acres...on Park Street there was a Creamery near the Agway store...it's a convenience store now, but back then we could watch the milk get processed through the big windows facing the street. Mrs. Abare at the "Little Store" was always behind the counter and was patient as we picked out 10 candies for a dime! The families...big ones...the Ziters, the Dubies, the Henneseys, the Bowleys, the Workmans...playing in the brickyard...the dumproad...Whitcombs Farm... I remember some surreal places...a wide, shallow stream where we picked crawdads...somewhere near the boyscout camp...on the Lang property somewhere, I believe...perhaps near the interchange that connects the Riverroad to Rte 2? The swamp behind the Greenwood Acres where we Vaulted from mossy island to mossy island with long poles cut from saplings...the ponds teeming with life...it was a world without video games and kids were outdoors more, or so it seemed...thank God you don't have to be a kid to be a child! I was 5 years old. It was just called the dump road back then and it was just about the only dirt road in the village, I think. We were the first house on the right past the turn to the dump (which was in fact the first and only house on the right on Cascade Street back then). The dump, like many around the State at that time was above ground (they hadn't developed the landfill yet). Every once in a while somebody would set fire to the trash heap and push what didn't burn down to the rivers edge; no wonder the Winooski was about the dirtiest body of water in the State then. The rats were rampant too and I remember going there with my dad when I was about 10 to shoot at them with a .22 rifle. I also remember some of the nicest, reddest wild tomatoes grew near the rivers edge. There was a pungent smell, but I don't remember it as being that bad, actually a sweet, burnt smell that permeated everything. I liked it there and even though the dump and the river were off limits to me by myself, I would sometimes sneak around and pick things out with my friends from the hood, Jeff Kent or Jeff Brooks.
