it seems as though our site has lost some of its momentum!?! I think I will make one more attempt via e-mail to drum up some of those who have participated in the past...the problem is that e-mail addresses don't seem to last very long, so i'm not sure how many of those who have visited over the years will be reachable...?

if there's anybody out there who still cares, we're having a party on August 7th because it's a good time to have a party in vermont for one thing, but also to raise awareness and maybe even some funds to keep this Essex Alumni Site open and maybe even make some improvements and upgrades...we'll see...?

Do mark your calendars...be brave...we won't be mailing any invitations...except the electronic kind...so do pass it on if you get it...AND...if you're visiting this site and you'd like to be contacted, do sign the guestbook and leave your e-mail address or send a personal e-mail to the webmaster, or to tim, chick or janice...thanks for your support!!!

Well for anyone out here in cyberland that cares, we had our 2nd annual Essex Alumni Gathering at Chris Halpin's place. We had a few more people than last year show up and we raised exactly enough funds to keep this site open for another year.

Thanks to Chris Halpin and Monika Baege, Kathie 'Harton' Cooke, David Prior, Ana VanOrnum and the Halpin family for helping to make our event happen!! Hope to do it again next year.

it's over three months later and we are barely breathing here at the EJHS Alumni website. Don't know what happened to all the alumni?

Not sure whether to plan for another event this summer or to call it quits?? If anybody out there has any ideas, or feels like voicing an opinion on the matter, please feel free to chime in at any time. Hey Tom Keenen, do you think you'll make it back east this summer? What about Maureen Purrington or Robin Morris, or Victoria over in Hawaii?

Come on people, don't be shy. Time is marching on and this site is beginning to show our age. We've had some people visit recently, so be brave and leave an entry at the guestbook, or maybe even start a post about something Essex related. There must be something new to talk about or something old to reminisce about???

What about the A&W on Pearl Street? Does anybody have any memories about this fine eatery; run by the Deslaurier family as I remember. Bill Raub worked there, as did Bob Gifford, Joe Ketcham and Mal Rich, but I'm guessing some others may have had some memories of this place too, which is now a Jiffy Lube? How about the Robo-wash on Maple Street? or does anyone remember the A&P grocery store on Park Street? I can vaguely remember the wooden floors and shelves of canned goods. I've been out of Essex for almost 30 years, but I have fond memories of growing up there as I'm sure many others have.

I'm sure we could encourage some to write about their experiences and the common link to this place. Maybe we could even get some of the computer savvy to post some pictures of Essex then and now?

Please don't give up on this site. Send money or pictures to the webmaster, leave messages and website links, so that we can spread the word about this little stop on the information super highway...Hey George, where are you??

Okay Tim, message received. As a matter of fact I will be in the northeastern U.S. in the summer, June sometime I think. I will be there with my family who love the area. As my daughters are now in high school, I am hoping they will come with us.
Since the holiday season is upon us, is a monetary gift to support this web site in order ? What is the right amount ?
I really am not able to advocate for a summer get together, since I live on the left coast. But as you all may remember, I always think a party is a good idea !
In case I don't hear from you, I am wishing each and every one of the EJHS alum a happy and healthy holiday season !
Tom

Bake Whities Store anybody remember the old crank case on Pearl Street? and Segrest Chicken Farm? How about St Peters store on West street? and the little ice cream stand on Pearl street, I stood and watched the old grand stand burn down too. That was some fire...

happy holidays to you too Tom! thanks for the post.

As for donations, Joe's the webmaster and we gotta keep him happy in order to keep this site going. You can send him a note of encouragement by clicking on the 'webmaster' and I'm sure he'll let you know where to send a gift of any amount. I trust that he'll let me know if we're getting too far behind with the overhead costs!

As for the June party, I think it would be as good a time as any. Let's see if we can get anymore interest here and go from there.

Coming up on 3 years later...since last post here...Tom, your kids must be college age now...This medium really allows the old time continuum to remind us of the fleeting nature of this life...here's hoping that visitors will jot down a note for posterity!

by the way,hey webmaster, is there a way to preserve these threads?

do sign the guestbook, leave a post, or drop me an e-mail if your perusing this site. Our class is now supporting this forum and it would be cool if more people would start to use it.

I heard there was a reunion, of sorts, at the Lincoln Inn this summer, does anyone have any pictures or a summary of the event and/or who showed?

anybody surfing into this site, check it out...it is now an historic archive...something worth saving, perhaps for future generations to enjoy? maybe we could cut and send it to the Smithsonian for permanent record of this time period?

is there anybody out there? hello, hello, echo, echo...

I'm actually thinking of getting a facebook account, but only to link to this forum...vermontersontheweb!

I come back here once in a great while to see if anybody posts a message...not in a long time, but you never know who might turn in here off the superhighway.

Essex Junction...it was a good place to grow up...I had a great childhood here and am thankful for it...some memorable landmarks stand out in my mind...The Tower, the Swiss Chalet and the Indian Acres...on Park Street there was a Creamery near the Agway store...it's a convenience store now, but back then we could watch the milk get processed through the big windows facing the street. Mrs. Abare at the "Little Store" was always behind the counter and was patient as we picked out 10 candies for a dime!

The families...big ones...the Ziters, the Dubies, the Henneseys, the Bowleys, the Workmans...playing in the brickyard...the dumproad...Whitcombs Farm...

I remember some surreal places...a wide, shallow stream where we picked crawdads...somewhere near the boyscout camp...on the Lang property somewhere, I believe...perhaps near the interchange that connects the Riverroad to Rte 2?

The swamp behind the Greenwood Acres where we Vaulted from mossy island to mossy island with long poles cut from saplings...the ponds teeming with life...it was a world without video games and kids were outdoors more, or so it seemed...thank God you don't have to be a kid to be a child!

I remember when my family moved onto Cascade Street in the Junction back in 1964. I was 5 years old. It was just called the dump road back then and it was just about the only dirt road in the village, I think. We were the first house on the right past the turn to the dump (which was in fact the first and only house on the right on Cascade Street back then). The dump, like many around the State at that time was above ground (they hadn't developed the landfill yet). Every once in a while somebody would set fire to the trash heap and push what didn't burn down to the rivers edge; no wonder the Winooski was about the dirtiest body of water in the State then. The rats were rampant too and I remember going there with my dad when I was about 10 to shoot at them with a .22 rifle. I also remember some of the nicest, reddest wild tomatoes grew near the rivers edge. There was a pungent smell, but I don't remember it as being that bad, actually a sweet, burnt smell that permeated everything. I liked it there and even though the dump and the river were off limits to me by myself, I would sometimes sneak around and pick things out with my friends from the hood, Jeff Kent or Jeff Brooks.
