Howdy "no name," you are asking a good question. The term "pocket" can be interpreted several different ways.

I will just mention one way: A common way a "pocket" can form--- such as in the "granites" (Herein I'm loosely lumping together all acidic intrusives, as well as gneiss and diorite and pegmatite dikes) of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. This is a classic textbook case, small but highgrade "free gold" pockets can be found by "hit and miss" prospecting within narrow veins of quartz.

The pocket can be associated with iron oxide and pyrite. Commonly it is a quartz-monzonite with free-milling gold values and some sulphides.

Off the top of my head: Pockets can also be found in a gossan; or as a residual eluvial deposit; or as an alluvial concentration; or as a clip zone (clipping a Tertuary channel).

What say anyone wishing to add more formal/informal information on a "pocket?" I'm listening and learning.
