Hi Paul,

The constraints of running from AA batteries don't give much scope for changing the power output. Even if the power was doubled you would only get, at best, 10% more range.

Maybe the Australian version has less receiver amplification to prevent overload on very strongly mineralised ground. Even with ground balancing, the ground signal is still there in the front end circuitry.
