Subject: minelab xt 17000

Isn't the battery voltage requirements for the xt 17000 six volts? A fellow I know runs his xt17000 at 12 volts (10-1.2 volt nicads in a series circuit , he seems to be electroniclly inclined. Does the higher frequency offer better performance? What's you guy's take on this?
