Subject: Steve Herschbach - Another idea bouncing around in my head...

This talk of the combo PI/flux-mag got me thinking some more along these lines.

Since a fluxgate magnetometer is basically a "receiver only" in that it detects the magnetic field of a ferrous object that already exists without an external stimulus (induced eddy current), why could that idea not be hybridized into and made a part of a PI machine? In other words, design a PI circuit that would work as normal until it detected a target signal, at which time the PI would automatically switch itself "OFF" and likewise switch the flux-mag "ON" to "discriminate" the presence of iron. Then if the flux-mag continued to signal a target (ferrous), it would switch itself back into the PI mode after a very short period, long enough for the operator to bypass the "bad" target. In this case, no need for the manual toggle.

Let's see if anyone runs with THIS ball..... (right Matt?)

Ralph
