I treasure words and their proper use. This puzzle has occupied far too much of my time for the past week now. Simple deduction says that the only single letter common English words are the letters "A" and "I." Using the parameters as given means that only one of the nine letters is one of these vowels. Since there are fewer two letter common English language words that contain the letter "I," it seems probable that the remaining letter ("A") is most probable, but not necessarily. I have ruled out "e, o, u and y" as the single letter word. These are acceptable in computer shorthand, but they are not truly acceptable words in common usage. The same goes for most consonants though I have seen some interesting misapplications of standard English in instant messaging and chat conversations over the years.

I am asking for clarification. Is there a single "A" or "I," or is the solution to the puzzle dependent on the order in which the remaining letters are removed? If not, then there could possibly be a repetitive vowel. Please post the clarification soon. My hovel is now awash in small scraps of paper that contain possible nine letter words containing potential solutions.

Thanks for the mind exercise, Bunny. I have been doing cerebral aerobics ever since you posted this.
