Hello! My name is CPT Mike Gallagher. I am an RA Captain who is currently serving as an Army ROTC instructor at the University of Michigan. I think SGT Canamare was a graduate of the University of Michigan. His name is engraved on a Plaque here at our Track and Field Complex. A reporter from the Ann Arbor news wants to write a story about him but needs some more information. Can you help me?

I was clearing out some old files and found some notes on George. I did another search and found you had responded! If you're still interested I would like to gather some information on George's service for a future Memorial Day or Veterans Day article at U of M.

I was troop clerk in '68-'69. We used to run together sometimes in the evenings. He was well respected, responsible, intelligent and clean-cut. I remember the shock of learning of his loss from one of the guys returning from patrol (I think if he was Villnueva). The Troop had a formation and service for him soon after. It was very moving to see his name on the Wall on New Years of 2001.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. In the back of my mind I was waiting for a phone call and never went back to the Blue Ghosts forum.
I'd be interested in whatever you could tell me about the unit. The patches, insignia, troop pictures, etc... I will still be able to get an article written in the Ann Arbor news about George's service for this Memorial Day or another time this year. What did he have to day about his time at the University of Michigan?

My wife's father was named John Q. Morris, everyone called him "buck". He was a Blue Ghost for two tours of duty, I believe in 68-69 and 72-73. He flew snakes. Unfortunately he and his wife were killed in an automobile accident in '76 and my wife was left an orphan. We have recently found some pictures and other documentation about him and I would love to get in touch with anyone who might have served with him. Any help or information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I new Buck, he was my cousin. The last time I saw him he was home on leave, after being shot down in Nam and injuring his leg. Buck was one hell of a guy, I don't think he was scared of anything. I was about five years younger than him, and loved it when we would go up to Fort Pearce and see him and the family.
I remember seeing your wife only one time when she was just a baby. Buck was in the service then so I didn't get to see him much after that. I got to see her Uncle Jimmy, and Grandmother Beth Lee at my fathers funeral, about three years ago.
My brother has met other pilots who served with Buck, and they have told him that he was one of the best pilots they ever saw. My brother is older than me and can probably give you more information than I can.
Good luck with your search. Your father was someone you can be proud of. I hope you see this as your post was from over three years ago. Bill

Dennis and Barbara has gotten the second newsletter posted and I know some of you have received it 'cause I've gotten calls.Continue to pass the word to any and all former brothers, it is a shame that Jessie Watson passed away this past summer. As you've read, his home is very close to Rocky Mount, NC and I feel he would have tried to come . . . we have to do a better job of finding each other ! Pensacola on Mar. 30, 31 & April 1, 2001 is set. The site is the Crowne Plaza Grand Hotel, Pensacola. It is located in the heart of the old historic district with many great resturants and saloons near by.You can call now and book your reservations, call the 800# and ask for the "BlueGhost Reunion", the block of rooms is set. Barbara wanted to have an insert for this newsletter outlining everything and a registration form. I resisted it because I didn't think we were ready yet. We aren't in the reservation business, the hotel management has agreed to handle everything. But Barbara was right, I did need to have a form attached; 'cause we need your arrival info, # in your party, # for dinner, etc., etc. So, keep an eye on this site and www.blueghosts.com for the up-to-the-minute ready line. I apologize to any and all 'cause the certificates were not ready as promised. A few minor glitches, I just wanted them done 1st class. Mr. Wiggins,

Jessie Watson was my Dad. I saw your posting from 2000 when I was surfing the web about my Dad's passing. Did you know him? I would love to hear about what life was like with him during his time spent as a Blue Ghost. He proudly hung pictures, plaques and other Blue Ghost items on his office wall for years. Now they are hanging in my parent's home in Fayetteville, NC. As you know he passed away nearly 4 years ago. I am his youngest daughter, Jessica. I was born 17 years after my sister. Some of you who knew my Dad perhaps don't know he had another daughter. My sister was just a baby at the time my Dad was in Vietnam. She is married with three children. Her husband is also in the Army. I was married a year and a half ago and we are expecting our first child. Mom still keeps in touch with some of the ladies she became close with over the years in the Military. I would love to hear what people remember about my Dad. Thanks.

Now that we have a good copy of the 1969 picture of the detachment (see my personal page) we need to identify all the faces. If you can help with even just one name, please reply. I remember the faces of a lot, but remember the names of only a few, and that is a shame.

I think it was Roberto berrara not carlos. DENNIS Smith is in back row with me. Madrigal is to galinski's left in 3rd row. I believe Moore is in front row. I'm trying to remember some of the others. Possibly from the year book.

Hello Troopers, I was with the Blueghosts Jan72-Nov72. It was my 2nd tour in Nam, my first tour was on the ground, 4/12th CAV in Qaung Tri.
Started with F/8 Troop in the Rifle Platoon, "graduated" to Nighthawk Team and was the free 60 gunner, then moved HQ as the RTO. Amazing group of dedicated and skillfull men. Proud to be a part of it all. If anyone remembers SGT Fergie, send me a line. Welcome Home. Best to you.

I was one of the first besides sp/4 Kidd to help build and fly as crew members. We had had one minigun, Zion search light, and a starlight scope on the left side. On the right side was another minigun, 50 Cal, and a free 60. This was a crew of 7 plus all AMMO. The 1st ship was done 1969 and we had to make another nighthawk ship because the 1st one was too heavy with ammo and got stressed out. Built another one with 1 minigun and the rest was the same. It lightened our load alot. This ship was built in 69 also and I left in late 70 and the ship was still flying.

Hello all I am wondering if one of yall can help me. I am trying to go to nashville auto diesel school and have my GI bill, but that doesn't pay for all my schooling. I am currently in the Marine Corps and still have 11 months left. If any of yall can give me any info on where I can get a loan or grant, or if I am entitled to any VA benefits or scholarships that would help pay for the schooling, I would appreciate it very much. Thank yall for your time.

I would go to the education center on the base.

They have counselors who can tell you what to do and where to apply.

Also, if you will do some surfing, the Navy Leauge, and a bunch of other Military associated organizations offer grants and loans.

It may eat up some time, but nothing is free.

Just curious. When were you with F/8. I flew from 6/71 to 11/71 with george theil, sam beagley, and gary stevens as nighthawk team from marble mountain danang. we didnt have another team. did you stay with D/1/1?

I was a doorgunner and then a crewchief on BlueGhost 622 all of 1970. I was there when CW2 Petrucci fired up the sharks in the ocean by the CG's hooch. In the unit at the time of CW2 SAITO's death. I have a lot more of details of things that happened there in 1970. I am in the process of writing my memoirs of my military career for my grand children. I remember both of these events. Petrucci was fined $500.00 ($250.00 for each shark) I was just numb about Sam's death, wasn't it just an engine or transmission failure which caused them to come down? I know he was killed by the main rotor during egress from the crash. I too am writing my memoirs of that time for my grandchildren and nephews. Please contact me. I was a gunner and crew chief for Nighthawk Sep70 to Sep71. I am trying to remember the date we were transferred to D Troop 1/1 Cav but we stayed in Chu Lai. Mario Cruz thinks it was after April of '71. Welcome Home.

Chuck Martin was the Hughes Tech Rep. (civilan) assigned to us. He worked very close with me in the Service Platoon in 67/68 when C/7/17th moved to Chu Lai and was redesignated F/8. I saw him again in 1970 when he lived in Marina Del Ray close to Los Angeles. He was laid off by Hughes and flew tuna spotting helos in Calif. for a while. Last time I heard from him was ~ 1980 (?) when he was flying and maintaining a small fleet of "commercial OH-6's" in Indonesia.

The Memorial Service for Gary Freeman is set. It will be held at the Pacific Helicopter Hangar, Kahului, Maui, Saturday, May 31, 2003 at 11:00. Gary's Memorial will include FULL Military Honors including a LIVE bugaler.

The pilots at PacHelo are trying to get permission to place a marker at the crash site. Today, some of the guys approached the Comissioners that will administer the "Island Reserve" and they talked favorably. If anyone would desire to contribute to this fund I will be posting a bank account number in a couple of days. Of course if anyone wants to send flowers or messages i know the family will appreciate them. ALSO....it is too late to mail anything from the mainland so i will INDIVIDUALLY give Blue Ghost and other friends, Cindy's address so you may mail her direct at a later date

Things may seem to be moving slowly but remember we are on an "Island" 2000 miles from the West Coast. Believe me being on MAUI TIME is DIFFERENT. The autopsy was completed late today and Gary will be at the Mortuary tomorrow.

We are doing everything we can to comfort Cindy and Gary's sons from this great distance. They will arrive here on Friday and be here for a few days. Their visit will include a flyover of the crash site (their request) . Being a former bombing range and covered in unexploaded ordinance they cannot get out of the helicopter in the area of the crash. Also on this flight we will sprinkle Gary's ashes on Maui in a place yet to be determined.

I find this email extremely hard to write but I must inform the BlueGhost 1969 of the passing of Gary Freeman. On May 22, 2003 while piloting a UH-1H helicopter on the island of Kahoolawe in Hawaii, Gary suffered mechanical failure and crashed. The helicoper burned in a post impact fire. It appears now, that a "longline" that was attached to the hook became entangled in the tailrotor with the subsiquent loss of the main rotor blades due to "mast bumping". Gary was recovered late yesterday afternoon and a small ceremony was held upon his final flight to Maui. His body was draped in the flag of our nation as he was honored with respect from his fellow pilots and friends and former VET'S. The Police Dept. Chaplin held a short ceremony shortly after Gary's arrival back at the hangar. As more information is available i will post to the Blueghost site.

Tom Hauptman and I are here taking care of his personal needs and are in touch with Cindy, Gary's wife. At this time it is unclear what memorial ceremony's will be held but i hope to have that info in a timely manner so all that want to attend can. The autopsy will not be held until Tuesday, due to the long wekend, so there will be a delay in Gary's journey to his final rest. A memorial will be held here on Maui for all the employees of Pacific Helicopters and Gary's friends and I will post the time of this Memorial also.

I would just like to pass on my sympathies to all who knew Gary Freeman. My father David Earley worked with Gary in New Guinea (Pacific Helicopters). He spent time with our family and became and great friend to all of us. Gary will be remembered forever in our hearts and we've lost a wonderful & generous human being. I will always remember his kind hearted nature and smile. He will be sorely missed.

Gary was a good friend through several years with pacific Helicopters Papua New Guinea and since .
I would very much appreciate Cindy's contact details and details of any funeral/memorial arrangements.

I got the privilege of flying with Gary Freeman while I worked with Pacific Helicopters in 1999 - 2000. Gary was a kind man and a great pilot. He was always smiling and was a pleasure to be around. I know he had a special comraderie with Mike McDonald and Tom Hauptman. They were and always will be 'brothers' 'till the end. The end just came sooner for one of them. Rest in peace Gary, and "Scouts Out!"

I have been in contact with the Director of Intelligence of the group searching for lost personnel in South East Asia during the Vietnam war. I asked him what he knew concerning Murphy and Eads lost in 70.This is what he wrote:
As for Murphy/Eads (our case 1603) we found the site in 1995 and excavated a
site 9 x 17 meters in 1996. We found skin of the aircraft with the word
"GHOST" hand-painted on the side. We found Eads ID tag, two watch bands,
two pairs of metalic boot soles and two armor chest plates.

Sent all of the material to the Life Sciences Laboratory in San Antonio and
they concluded that two U.S. Army crewmen had sustained fatal injuries in
this crash. Unfortunately we did not recover their remains.

I was on guard duty in a bunker on the cliff above where the ship landed. It was right next to the MAG 36 chopper pad. It was New Years Eve, 1966. It was raining like hell and I kept watching the lights on the ship get closer and closer to the rocks. Finally, I heard this tremendous screech. I called the communications shack and told them about the noise. They came down and we all stood around wandering what had happened. The next morning, some of us went down to the rocks below and picked up item that had escaped from the hull. It was quite an experience. I was a Musket CE in the 176th and was shot down on 13 Sep 69 near 0P1 (or was it OP George?).The only time I ever worked with the Ghost's and y'all saved our a---. What would you like to know about Captain Arnold " Dusty" Holm ? I knew him in flight school and was in the same unit in Vietnam with him. He was listed as missing in action ( presumed?) killed in action , on June 11,1972 in Northern Military Region 1, southwest of Quang Tri, RVN. His body has not been recovered. He was the Scout Platoon leader (Blue Ghost White) flying OH-6's and was shot down with his crewchief, presumed to be hit by a rocket propelled grenade or missle. He left a widow and a small child.

At the time I was a radio transmission operator at HQ in a bunker off the airstrip. The Blueghosts had been moved temporaraly from DaNang (Marble Mountain airbase) north to Hue to support the ARVN honchos and US Advisors removal from forward firebases. The NVA were coming across the DMZ into Quang Tri provence from the north and from the east. This was a major offensive and they came with vehicles; jeeps,trucks and tanks, such was not seen before. As I remember it Dusty's platoon was on a recon mission, there were two scout choppers, Capt.Holms chopper came in over a rise and spotted a caravan of trucks, they thought they were ARVN's and went back for a second look, the canvas came off the trucks, these were NVA regulars, there were rocket propelled grenades,51 cal. machine guns and much small arms fire. Dusty's bird was shot down. A second scout chopper went in because they saw what they said was the pilot or crew chief on the ground running. When this chopper went in it was shot down too. There such intense fire from the ground, the cobra gunships unloaded and the platoon had to be called back, artillery was brought in. As I recall, two choppers and four men were lost that day. Next day our unit went back for search and rescue but never found him. As I recall, both choppers on the ground were destroyed in place. This is one of the worst days I remember. Dusty was a striking figure and good natured. Hope this helps.

I am an original member of the 570th T.C. Detachment that built up at Ft. Campbell and flew on the C-141 direct to Chu Lai in June 1968 to support the Blueghosts. I am very proud of my service and worked with some great guys. At some time before I left one year later, a picture was taken of the whole unit in front of the new hangar. I do not remember getting a copy before I left. I've seen copies of the picture, and thanks to Doc Anderson I have a machine copy. These copies are not very clear and detailed. Does anyone have a clean original copy of the picture we can use to place on this website ? With some work we could identify everyone and add the names. Sure hope someone can help. Burkie.

Spook ! So glad to hear from you. Yes, I did get the picture and it is in great condition. I am trying to determine the best means to have it physically duplicated, then have it scanned and made available on the website if Dan will post it. I will have 30 years at The Hoover Company in May and would like to retire, but cannot live on my early retirement pension - unless I find an easier office-type job as a fill until I reach 62. I do not remeber much about him I was very young when he died. His sister my mother can only tell me about him when they where going up she does not speak about him during the time he died very often. Yes, I remember Cliff. I worked with him along with Earl Courtney. He was taller than I, long angular narrow face, a little skinny, a no BS kind of guy and I may have a couple of photos with him as he crewed for me on a number of flights. It'd take some digging though to turn them up.
He worked with us in the 570th TC Detachment and was with the outfit in Kentucky when we formed up.
I have only good rememberance thoughts of the man.

Cliff was a great guy. I met him at Ft. Campbell when the 570th T.C. Detachment was building up to go to Nam. He was in maintenance for a few months, was a good mechanic and team leader, then decided he wanted to fly. If I remember correctly, he extended his tour in Nam in order to get out of the Army a few months early, or else he would have flown home with a group of us late in June 1969. May God Bless him. I also will look to see if I have any pictrues of Cliff at Fort Campbell or Chu Lai.

I have been looking for Rudy for years in various publications like VHPA etc. He was from outside Philadelphia and since I was originally from Philly I have even tried to find him or family members in the phone book, without success. John and I arrived in country about the same time(Jan of 72). I wouldloved to have been with him on that last bus but I was the one who went home with burns in June as the only survivor of the June 11/12 battles. I was not aware of the Blueghost web site until a few days ago. I would like to here from any of the Blue Ghosts who would care to make contact. I thought I recognized Dennis White in the reunion pictures.

Capt. Larron Murphy was my Tactical Officer in Infantry OCS.(I was an Officer Candidate and he was a Lieutenant at that time.) He was a great guy. I have read on the internet what happened to him in April 1970. I would like to find out more about what happened and if a recent detailed search has been made of his crash site. I would be interested in communicating with his friends from his unit, or others, in Viet Nam. I have some stories about Larron as a Tactical Officer in Infantry OCS. The bottom line is that he was the best. The guy was the personification of leadership. If you can give me a clearer picture of what happened to him, I would appreciate it.

Jerry, I can give you some insight on Murph's last mission,
it was late night about 11:30 or midnite, we got a scramble
for an emergency extraction of a Lerp team we had put in
earlier, they were pinned down, and surrounded according to
our radio contact, Bob Drury, was team lead with Murph flying his wing, I was the extraction bird, with the old man Paul
Stalker flying my cover. It was a terrible night for flying,
the weather was socked in, our initial attempt to the
location was to stay as low as possible flying out through
the valley south of LZ West, but the valley was totally
socked in, we came back out, got some altitude an made an
attempt to go out on top, we all some went IFR, we all went
to a black-out {shut off nav's and strobe's}and continued on
our mission calling out our heading and altitude constantly
to maintain seperation. I made the decision that I was not
going to take the risk of me and my crew of going down through the socked in mountains, not knowing exactly where we were to attempt the extraction, myself and Maj. Stalker
made 180's started aclimb and headed toward the south China Sea, Drury and Murph were going to try to get a radio fix on the Lerp team and give them some fire support, it seemed
like only seconds after we turned that Murph called out that
he was crashing, his voice was as a state of surprise, my
best guess was that he and Eads had flown into a mountian.
We, Blueghost searched for the daily with no luck. I do
understand that they were recently found, or at least the crash site, identified, and repatrioted . If I can be of more assistance to your effort please feel free to contact me. Bob Cornell "Ghost 35"

Thank you for your account of what happened the night that Larron "Bucky" Murphy went down. I refer to him as Bucky because that's what his baby sister, my wife, still calls him. I would greatly appreciate any further information, stories, and especially any pictures (if you have any) of or about Bucky. Bucky is survived by his father - Rev. Lawrence Murphy, oldest brother - Wayne, younger sister - Sherri, younger brother - Kenneth, baby sister - Susan (my wife), and daughter - Kim. Hi Brothers,I was looking over your web sight and saw you was attached to the Americal. I was in the 1st Armored Div. at Hawk Hill. I was in Nam april 68' to 69' and Blue Ghost flew air support for us. I had to drop a line and say Thanks. I served with F/8th during 1972 as a slick crewchief. Served with Jim Campbell now lives in AR., Summer, Sharma (would like to know what happened to Sharma) Hager (I took him to the hosp. after a frightful episode, he ended up smashing a doctors "flight glasses") Byrne, and his dog Sue, Terpenning from Pittsburg, Ward, Beeghly CA. we never got back in touch so missed the bike trip across the USA with Campbell, Winters (co. clerk) IL depending on his ID, Dickout, Hackett KIA, Wiley KIA good friend. Ran into LT Martin in Ft. Benning Ga. after he was burned trying to rescue Wiley. Dear Vet, Not sure why I picked this bulletin board but here goes. I am a 47 year old high school teacher who missed the war ,barely, because of age. Lived it as much as I had to via the newspaper and tv. Had a chance to make a small difference back in 1990 when I spearheaded a high school scholarship and war memorial for our lone small town Vietnam casualty. I am now involved in a large protestant church who recognizes that a long overdue thank you is due. We wish to write a play entitled, "Not Forgotten". The three of us who are writing this do not have the first hand knowledge of what you experienced and we want to be accurate and sensitive. We also want the perspective from the soldier who went to war as a man or woman of faith as well as you soldiers who profess(ed) no religious leaning. We really don't want this to be some milk-toast-come-to-Jesus play, though for us we realize that power,so we really need some honest input. Maybe some hard questions if your up to it:
Some of the hardest parts to deal with there, hardest thing to deal with once home , fond memories,things or people that made a difference, most vivid memory. Really, we want what YOU think we need to hear. Honest, heartfelt info is greatly appreciated. Would you tell us in your own way? The San Diego Reuinon was small but large in the comraderie and personal spirit that was enjoyed by all. It was a great event in every respect. We had 22-23 who showed up for roll call and that enabled all to get together for a better chance to get to know each other and renew memories, see photos and just enjoy each other. What a great time. thanks to "Doc" & Ernie and Barbara and all that put the effort in in arranging the facilities and communications. I rode my Harley down to SD and could not have had a better time. I sure missed all of you that couldn't make it. Thanks to those who did make it and we're looking forward to the next one. For those who didn't - we toasted you as we toasted the members who have preceded us to Fiddler's Green. Greetings to all.

Mike McDonald (Duck,BG3? most of 69) turned me on to the web site. Im saddened by Chuck G. passing, he and I yoosta get ripped together. Myself, Gary Freeman and Mike McDonald are all flying on a contract together on Maui. Wes Robinson flys thru on occasion as a 757 captain on American Transair, Howard Shimokawa (Shimo) is a Dentist on Maui.Ive lived here for 25 years and have yet to see him. Mike Bucove (Spook) comes and visits once in a while, we talk on the fone regulaly. He lives in Bellingham Wash, and is still and active pilot like my own sorry ass. Hey guys, my dad served with Blueghost in 68-69, I have seen pictures in his photo albums and have seen Mike McDonalds name, My dads name is Charlie (Chuck) Madden, also I am curently flying helicopters with the WV guard and my previous platoon leader was Fred Nicely. Anyway it would be nice to here from any of you guys, I am and have been interested in Blueghost and the men who served in it. Also I found a neat book at Mother Rucker on air cavalry and it talks a little about the history behind F/8 CAV.

I was a pilot with HHC 196th LIB flying all the places you guys flew at about the same time. We had just seven pilots (counting the Brigade Aviation Officer - who only flew occasionally and then only in the Brigade Commander's C & C ship), three UH1s and four OH23s. Obviously there were more than enough ships to go around. Everyone flew every day. There was little attention paid to hours and supposed mandatory down time.
Anyway, late one evening I found myself lifting off LZ Baldy after a very full, tiring day, facing a long flight home in a very slow old OH23. Our Ravens had no attitude indicators. Just air speed, RPM, oil, torque and temp. It was getting dark fast and it was real apparent that my visible horizon was going to disappear at any moment. When you are out in a 23 with no visible horizon you are in deep, deep sh--! Anyway, I was headed south for Chu Lai (Ky Ha) thinking I should turn around and just spend the night at Baldy when I spotted a bunch of BlueGhosts lifting off from the next LZ south of Baldy (Hawk Hill - I think). I contacted the flight and asked if they would mind letting me form up on them so that I could use their nav. lights to make an artificial horizon. They said sure. Only problem was you guys had LOHs and Cobras. With a max air speed of about 86 knots, I soon found it was impossible to keep up. I had to plead with them to slow up. These guys had had a long day and wanted to get back. They only reluctantly slowed down to what must have seemed to them to be an absolute crawl. As we flew south they kept getting a little faster and a little faster until I was just a vague memory. Luckily by the time they got so far out in front I could not use their lights anymore, we came up on Tam Ky, and I gained a usable ground lights horizon. I knew I should be able to get on in on my own. I advised them to go ahead and before I could say thanks - they had all pulled away like rockets.
For years it made a good story, talking about trying to make a 23 keep up with LOHs and Cobras while fearful of losing my horizon at any moment.

I was glad to see the guys at the reunion and I believe we all had a good time.I will be changing a lot of things within the next 2-3 weeks and some of it will require down time (12-24 hours). Billy Martin, Mike McDonald and I lived and flew together from pre-flight, through 68-31B4 (Purple Hats) at Ft Wolters, TX and 68-517 4th WOC, Ft. Rucker Alabama. I was assigned up the beach in 2nd Platoon, A/123 AVN, (Pelicans)(Dec 68-Dec 69).
These are the first pictures of Billy I have seen since his death. Thank you for posting them. He was a true friend and I miss him.

The registrations forms are flowing in everyday. As of Dec 27th, I have 35 already confirmed. Remember, to be elgibile for the three drawings, you must have your registration form postmarked NLT 1/31/01.

I trust the holidays have been good for everyone. Dennis had surgery on his back, Dan and Donna Delor were in up-state New York (probably snowed in) Richard is in Hawaii 'til the third week in January . . . on and on and on. If Jack Kennedy would send be an email message I'd appreciate it. I got back an undeliverable piece of mail from Arizona . . . think you're only 'ghost'out that way. It could have been the registration form. Let me know and I'll send another.

I was an infantry transfer from C 1/2 1st Infantry Div. when it was pulled out by Nixon. I volunteered for door gunner on my arrival at ChuLai and was placed in armament for F Troop 8th Cav end of April or 1st of May 1970. I primarily did armament but flew some missions as gunner in both hueys and Cobra and even filled in a couple of times for air ground recovery. On DD 214 it shows automatic rifleman. Just looking for old friends please contact if you wish.
