Subject: It's not about the art, it's about the $$$$ (get over it)

Are you people all oblivious or what? Liz has said point blank that she wants to get played on the radio and sell lots of records.
Here's a few samples of a few recent articles on the new album:

Also like others, she was originally attracted to the Matrix because of their work with Ms. Lavigne. "I remember hearing 'Complicated' and being almost jealous," Ms. Phair recalled. "I thought, 'Aw, that's what I want to sound like.'"

"That's why I'm trying, with this record, to cross over into beta bandom. I'm trying to be my own beta band. Why use someone else? Just take your own alpha career and go beta. And that's not even a joke. I'm trying to parody myself. [giggles] I'm trying to become like a washed up, diluted version of my own self and rake it in."

Q: Are you worried about alienating some of your prior indie-ish fan base? Because even without hearing the album yet, the people on your fan sites seem to feel betrayed.
A: It's appropriate that they feel that way. Because what I'm doing is leaving them to go seek other people.
----------------------------------------------------
Some of you people really need to wake up and smell the coffee. No one forced Liz to sign with Capitol or to work with the Matrix- Liz knows exactly what she is doing. The album isn't as awful as some have made it out to be; I think Liz described it best herself as a washed up, diluted version of herself so that she can rake it in. Maybe a few of you should go back and take a listen to "Shitloads Of Money" from WCSE, because I think some people didn't get that it wasn't meant to be ironic.

Well, her new target audience is around 13 years old. She'll have a grand time with them I'm sure. Actually she can probably just do different classes of shows. If (big if) her stuff takes off the the junior high set, she can play shows with Avril and Britney, and then also play small venues where she can grab at her crotch.

I for miss my little blowjob queen, so kiss off.

Of course Liz is wanting $$$, we know that, and those quotes from Liz explain where she's at, which is a fine attitude to have. She probably wants to earn some cash, no harm in that.

The problem is that the new album is awful. Really, really awful. Not just the production, but the songs are rather bad too.

And that has nothing to do with commericialism, but quality. There are loads of big sellers who make great music, seem to recall the White Stripes album is doing rather well, those Queens Of the Stone Age lads are finding a whole new audience, PJ Harvey gets better and better. It is possible to make great music and get on the radio, earn money and respect while you are doing it. No one has to stay in an indie ghetto.

But there's no excuse for bad music.

Ya know, the album's not that bad. Yes, it's (quote fingers) slick (quote fingers ended). But directed at 13 year olds? Uh, I don't think the lyrics are gonna work with 13 year olds.

What's so bad about Liz wanting to grow her fan base? I mean, shit, she's got an excellent voice and excellent music; if this album brings more people to her older stuff, I'll consider it a success. And more power to her for wanting to make money -- it's hardly as bubblegum Avril as people are saying. Listen to the lyrics. She's still edgy Liz, overall.

the lyrics suck on this album! "why can't i breathe whenever i think about you?" it's not about liz releasing a POP album, it's about her releasing a BAD album. how can someone who wrote "canary" or "divorce song" or "stratford on guy" when she was like 25, write "favorite" from the new album after TEN YEARS of life experience? that's the problem--if it was a pop album of interesting lyrics and stories and ideas, it would be fine. the fact that it's a pop album FILLED with lyrics like "it's an itch we know we are gonna scratch/gonna take awhile for this egg to hatch" is what's annoying.

The thing is, though the album is probably far more poppy than the others (alas, I have only heard the single), Liz's fans will still buy it. I know I will. She deserves to be played on the radio. Her sound, for me, has always been solid and has always eluded any major radio play, with the exception of "Supernova", which can hardly be called given "major" radio play.

I also tend to think that if radio finally embraces Liz, then it is a step forward for corporate radio on a whole. I once had a program director for a major "alternative" station tell me that "the only thing Liz Phair will ever be remembered for is 'Supernova'."
I would love for him to be proven wrong.

As far as $$$ is concerned, what's wrong with making some cash while, at the same time, broadening your sound and trying something new for yourself? Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. It's been far too long since her last album...I'm ready to hear some growth.

First of all, I was a Liz fan. This new album *is* a total SELLOUT.

To actually say that Liz should be played on the radio is a joke. Have you heard corporate radio these days? Would you really want to subject an artist *you like* to that kind of bonehead, lowest-common denominator audience? I would get so pissed if a band I respected trotted some musical garbage, just to get in good with the likes of Clear Channel.

I could support airplay of her new album IF radio was bending it's rules to allow Liz's music on, (re: the older stuff). BUT NO! Liz is bending *herself* to GET on the radio. That's just plain wrong. WCSE sold just fine with little to no airplay.

And she is turning her back on the fans that made her a respected artist in the first place. She openly admits she wants younger, hipper fans. Well, guess what? It might work for a little while, but THAT audience won't be around for the album after this one - and this album will be totally forgotten, rightly so. And I don't expect alot of her true fans will stick around after getting crapped on like this. She's getting the angle both ways - sounding like Avril (one ticket to success) and singing lyrics Avril *could not* get away with (sex always sells).

Yes, Liz deserves money for her work. I thought she had it - we, the fans who have been with her for years, gave it to her. But it obviously wasn't enough, because now she's after Top 40 bucks. I can't support that. I was going to buy it, but after hearing tracks and reading comments she's made, I am severely disappointed.
