Subject: Life-denying literalism?

I have heard Grant in the past say that he does not take the scriptures literally. He says that we should not. Why? Because such literalism of ancient text are life-denying. Life-denying???

Reading the scriptures literally gives me hope, not denies life. If I read the scriptures as just fictional stories, I cannot relate to them. How can you relate to something that did not happen?

When reading the scriptures, I see a history of people who experienced God. I see people that received revelations from God, so that they could better understand the deity that they worshipped. I see people that were involved in various wars and battle so that they could maintain their freedom. I see people that are just like people today. Humans have not changed over time. Humans are the same today, as they were in times past, despite what techonology these humans have. We are told that we can learn from history. But how can we learn from the history in the Book of Mormon or Bible, if we cannot and must not view those books as literal history? How can we learn if we view those books as fiction rather than fact?

It is clear that Grant will not learn from history, because he does not believe that the scriptures are authentic histories.

And if Grant and company fail to learn, they will eventually fail also, just as the people found in the scriptures.
