Canada is a land of many cultures and many peoples. Aboriginal peoples have occupied the territory now called Canada for several thousands of years. Everybody else, either by birth or by descent, has been an immigrant - we have all come from somewhere else. It has been said that Canada is a "nation of immigrants." There are three main groups of Aboriginal peoples in Canada: the First Nations, the Inuit and the Métis. There are more than 50 different languages spoken by Canada's Aboriginal peoples, most of which are spoken only in Canada. In fact, the name "Canada" may have come from the word "Kanata," which means a settlement in the language of the Huron-Iroquois First Nations peoples. As a country, Canada came into being on July 1, 1867. This event is known as "Confederation." Before 1867, the French arrived first, then the British. Each brought their own language, system of government, laws and culture. In 1763, after a long war between the British and the French, all of Canada came under British rule and was known as "British North America."

In the late 18th and into the 19th century, during and after the time of the American Revolution, many African-Americans and United Empire Loyalists fled the United States for Canada, where British ties remained and slavery had been abolished. During the mid- to late 19th and early 20th century, waves of immigrants arrived from Europe, attracted by the opportunity of a new and better life in Canada. Some settled in towns and cities; others worked in factories, mines and lumber camps. Many were farmers who turned the Prairie region into wheat fields. Asian immigrants from China, Japan and India settled mainly in the western provinces during this time. Many immigrants helped build Canada's national railways, which joined the east and west coasts and opened up the interior for settlement. After both world wars, thousands of Europeans came to Canada as immigrants and refugees and helped build Canada's post-war economy.

Over the last 50 years, people from all over the globe have sought a better life or have sought refuge in Canada, fleeing civil wars, political unrest and natural disasters. Canada still needs the skills, talents and enthusiasm of newcomers to build our country, together with those who have come before them. All of this has been reflected in Canada's immigration and refugee policies. Today, Canada is home to immigrants from

If you sit for long periods, make sure your back is properly supported. Place a small roll in the arch of your lower spine (at waist height) to maintain its normal S-curve. Simply a towel, or cushion rolled up will do.
When lifting, never bend down from the waist, lower and raise yourself at the knees. Keep your back straight and hold the object close to your body. If you are going to carry anything any distance that may be heavy, make sure that your way is clear. You do not want to be dodging around things when you are carrying.
Balance items you carry evenly on both sides of your body and hold them close or use a knapsack.
Sleep on your back if possible, with knees raised on a pillow. If you sleep on your side, a pillow between the knees is a big help.
If you need a firm bed, place a board between the mattress and the box spring.

Lower Back Pain
Eight out of ten Americans will experience a backache at some point. Back pain is the second most common reason for doctor visits in the U.S. The causes of lower back pain are numerous. Some of the more common causes of lower back pain are:

Update on the status of legislations to outlaw horse slaughter on both federal and state level. Urgent attention required to pass federal bills!

1) FEDERAL LEVEL: HR 857 AND S. 2352: The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

HR 857 (also known as The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act) and its Senate version, S. 2352, are Federal Legislations which will ban the slaughter of horses in the whole country as well as the transportation of horses for slaughter across US borders making sure that no American Horse is killed for human consumption, neither in the US nor in Mexico or Canada.

HR 857 is still pending on the House Agriculture Committee blocked by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, and its Senate version, S.2352, has been introduced on April 27. Both bills need desperate support and more Co-sponsors in order to pass both the House and the Senate before the November elections.

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! PLEASE, WRITE, FAX, CALL AND EMAIL YOUR US SENATORS ASKING THEM TO CO-SPONSOR S. 2352 AND YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND THE MEMBERS OF THE AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE URGING THEM TO CO-SPONSOR HR 857 AS WELL AS TO ASK REPRESENTATIVE GOODLATTE TO STOP BLOCKING IT. The second best way to contact your Congressman and Senators is by either writing or by sending a fax to their Washington, DC office. There are some key points you should mention in your letters:

- Since horses are NOT food animals nor are bred for food or fiber, they receive VERY POTENT DRUGS, such as dewormers, painkillers, hormones, anti-inflammatory medications, pesticides. non-for-human use antibiotics and vaccines THAT BECOME RESIDENT ON THEIR FLESH and which are not only VERY STRONG CARCINOGENS but also EXTREMELY TOXIC WHEN CONSUMED BY HUMANS. These drugs are already BANNED ON FOOD ANIMALS such as cows or pigs and this is clearly stated on their packages (not for use in horses intended for food). Tell them that horse slaughter promotes abuse and theft; that in Texas, where are located the two only slaughterhouses remaining in the US horse abuse and theft is rampant.

They are siphoned directly to Belgium and France, the home country of the only 2 operative horse slaughterhouses remaining in the US. In addition, these plants pays NO state taxes. - There are better alternatives to deal with unwanted horses, such as rescuing, retraining programs or chemical, painless euthanasia.

Dear Senator _________________:

I am writing to you in the hope that I can somehow convince you to support and co-sponsor S. 2352, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This bill was introduced by Senators Ensign and Landrieu along with several other Senators and would prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption, as well as the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption.

I ask you to support and co-sponsor this legislation as being positive for Americans, American horses and the American horse industry. Also, please let me take this opportunity to remind you of some of the strong arguments I have in asking you to support it.

Eating horses in America or killing them for human consumption is ethically and morally unacceptable. Horses in America are considered pets and sport/leisure animals; not food animals. The foreign-owned horse slaughter industry has slaughtered and exported for human consumption over 3 million American horses in the last two decades. This is intolerable and we should not allow this abominable practice to continue in our country.

Since horses are not food animals, nor are they specifically bred for food or fiber, they are medicated with very potent drugs, such as dewormers, painkillers, hormones, anti-inflammatory medications and pesticides for fly control. These medications become resident in their flesh and are specifically labeled not for human use. Not only do they contain very strong carcinogens but are also extremely toxic when consumed by humans. Some of these drugs are already banned on domestic food animals such as cows or pigs and this indication is clearly stated on their packages (NOT FOR USE IN HORSES INTENDED FOR FOOD).

Horse meat poses a great risk for the health of people who eat it abroad and therefore we must not allow the production and exportation of this product. It is unconscionable to allow a food product to be exported for human consumption that simply is not safe to be consumed, especially in light of recent bans by the European Union on exports of American meat.

Since there is no export tariff on horse meat, no profits from this deplorable business remain in America. In addition, these foreign-owned companies pay no state taxes at all. Therefore, all the profits from horse slaughter are siphoned directly to Belgium and France, the home countries of these corporations. Economically, it is point proved that horses are more valuable for the economy live than dead. While the live horse industry creates millions of dollars each year and provides jobs for thousands of people, the horse slaughter industry only creates profit for these corporations.

Horses are taxed as a non-food and recreational animal (although classified as "livestock"), and as such are not exempt from state and local sales taxes, as are animals that are traditionally raised for food. If horses become part of the "food chain", each state will lose millions of dollars annually in sales tax revenue alone.

Horses slaughtered by these foreign-owned industries in the United States have often been hauled several thousand miles over several days, contrary to acceptable non-slaughter standards for water, food, and rest. Horses sent to be slaughtered are often shipped on crowded double-decker trucks designed for shorter necked species such as pigs, cattle and sheep, and are forced to travel in a bent position which can result in suffering, injury and death.

Callous and extremely inhumane treatment at the slaughterhouse results in prolonged suffering. Horses endure repeated blows to the head with stunning equipment that often does not render the animals unconscious and many horses remain conscious during their own slaughter, including having their throats slit.

Horse slaughter is a barbaric and despicable business. A vast majority of Americans (over 85% according to recent polls) are opposed to it. They, together with the horse industry's professionals and numerous equine welfare and other humanitarian organizations, are currently working to get the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (whose House Version has already 224 Co-sponsors) enacted in order to ban it entirely from this country.

Claims saying that a ban on horse slaughter will lead to an increase on abuse cases and horses abandoned on streets and fields is false and ridiculous. There is no overpopulation of horses. Since California passed legislation banning horse slaughter and its transport for slaughter 6 years ago, horse abuse and starvation cases decreased. Also, during the last years the number of horses slaughtered decreased dramatically (from over 300,000 in the 90's to less than 50,000 in 2003) and the extra number of horses that were not slaughtered each year did not cause any increase on abuse or neglect cases.

Americans do not eat horses nor do we raise our horses for food. The only reason horse slaughter exists is to satisfy the palates of foreigners who consider horseflesh a delicacy along with the greed of the corporations which provide it. "Killer buyers" who travel from one auction to the next filling up their trucks provide the horses for this industry. Others are stolen; even our federally protected wild horse population can end up there. In addition, horse slaughter promotes horse theft. Since California banned the slaughter of horses in 1998, horse theft has decreased over 34%, while the welfare of horses has significantly improved. May I also point out that in Texas where the only two operating horse slaughterhouses remaining in the US, horse theft and abuse is rampant.

In spite of contrary claims, the great majority of the horses slaughtered are not old, sick, crippled or unwanted, but instead, are young, healthy, fat American horses, including federally protected wild horses. Pregnant mares and mares with very young foals at their side; purchased at auction where slaughterhouses middlemen dubbed "killer buyers" which outbid families and farmers looking for pets, riding and working horses.

Horses have played a significant role in the history and culture of the United States. As a non-food and recreational animal, horses should be protected from slaughter. Again, I urge you to support and cosponsor S.2352, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

i love horses.i think they deserve better then to end up in a terrifing slaughter house. that is soooooooooo wrong they helped us biuld the towns we live in. and have been our faithful friends.they have died in our wars and kept the cowboys company on the range and helped him move his cattle. i also have a problem with people thinking its cool to get drunk and go for a ride i had a beautiful appy mare get killed by her previous owner who took her from our stables on night after we had been out to feed the horses he came out when they were still i the barn eating and took her out on a dark country road where she was hit by two cars and he only got a slap on the hand he didnt get in trouble for steeling her and didnt get in trouble for being drunk and riding her on a highway i think if you are going to ride drunk you should be arrested for dwi i would love to find other people who feel the same maybe we could change the laws and give my sweet daisy some justice

I've been having dificulty finding anyone to answer me.
The love of my life is horses. The only problem is that I live in a city, where you can't have such big animals. I feel that I don't get to be around them that much, and I don't know what to do. I have been trying to volunteer at different places, but I still want a horse of my own. I am not old enough to move out though.

Horse has just been vaccinated with african horsesickness
the vet said that the horse needs only 2 days of complete rest and then walking only considering if the horse is not sweating. I feel the horse needs to be rested for 6 weeks.

Is it okay to let my horse eat hay rolls that have gotten wet or are still wet? My feed store won't sell hay bales when it's raining but they sure will load a roll right on up. I never let my horse eat wet bales (or dried wet bales) but she seems okay with the wet rolls. Can anyone clarify this for me - I am greatly confused on this! Thanks much.

really didn't have anything to lose, so I asked him for a copy of the
letters. I followed the instructions exactly, mailed 200 copies, and
sure
enough, the money started coming in! It arrived slowly at first, but
coming. I
kept a precise record of the earnings, and in the end, it totaled
$978,493! I
could hardly believe it. I met with my friend for lunch to find out
exactly how
it worked. He told me there are quite a few similar letters around,
but this one
is different because there are six names at the end of the letter,
not five like
some others. This fact alone results in your name being in far more
returns. The
other fact was the help I gave him, making sure the whole thing was
legal, since
no one wants to take the risk of doing something illegal.
By now you are surely curious to know what small changes to make. If
you sent a
letter like this one out, in order to be completely legal, you must
actually
sell something in order to receive a dollar in return. So when you

to each of the names on the list, you must include these
words, "PLEASE
PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST" and include your name and address. This
is
the key to the program. The item you will receive for the dollar you
sent to the
six people below is the letter.
At the time I first tried this idea, I was earning a good living as a
lawyer.
But everyone in the legal profession will tell you there is a lot of
stress that
comes with the job. I told myself if things worked out, I would
retired from my
practice and play golf. I decided to try the letter again, but this
time I sent
500 copies. Three months later, I had totaled $2,341,178!
Here are a few reasons a person might give for not trying this

people think they can never make a lot of money with anything this
simple.
Some are afraid they will be ridiculed for trying some dream of large
sums of
money, but do nothing to actually achieve it. Some are just plain

simple
instructions exactly, and in less than three months, you will receive
$800,000
GUARANTEED! Keep what you are doing to yourself for awhile. Many will

4. When you have completed the instructions, take this letter and
then go to
(Google, Yahoo,...) and type in (Making Money Message board, or post
message,...)and start posting your copy to 200 message boards, or
more this is
only the minimum, you can post as much as you like...The more copies
you send
the better the results. Keep a copy of this letter so you can use it
a second
time. Post it out again in six months, but Post it with the addresses
you
receive with each dollar. It will work better the second time. NOTE:
This
service is 100% legal - (Refer to title 18 section 1302 of the U.S.
Postal &
lottery laws)

I am 26 and still living at home with my parents. The reasons are b/c financially and just b/c its just not the right to leave yet. I do work hard at the job I do and I just got my first good horse a year ago. I am still looking for another horse and property and stuff like a trailer, but I know I'll get those things eventually as long as I keep going like I am. When I’m older I would love to be a professional rider, either a 3 day eventer or a showjumper. However I currently don’t even own my own horse and have no way of doing so until I’m much older (I’m only a teenager now). I get to ride once week at a nearby riding school, so I am improving. But how do I make my dreams a reality? Even if I don’t succeed I’d seriously like to be a much better rider than I am now, even if I’m not the best. I saw the Confident Rider CD's praised on a message board a while back. I have had problems with my confidence after a nasty fall last summer. (It was only clear round jumping and probably the smallest fence on the course) I have never bought anything over the internet before but decided to get Jumping with Confidence. I bought it direct from the website. although I have seen them somewhere else, one of the saddlerys I think. The difference has been amazing, through the self hypnosis, I have managed to put my nerves to one side and enjoy my riding again. I am going to get the Hacking one when I get paid.
