Rather than repeat it, I just say read my response to Melody's post. The King was not exactly what we think of as a king today or did two or three hundred years ago.
Actually, at this time, education might have been available to the higher nobles and those close to them, but was probably little used. Education was, generally, the realm of priests and monks. That is why most of the literature we read comes to us from the speaking of the poet that had later been written down. We have no problem with this regarding the Soninke people or the Navajos, but tend to overlook it in Western Europe because the people then had writing, and although they did, the vast majority of them did not know how to do it or read it.
