Last week, Springfield held the ball for a total of 34 minutes against the visiting Machine, which contributed heavily to their 24-17 victory. The win puts the Slayers in control of their own destiny and their quest to win the Great Plain Division. It’s simple-—win this week on the road in Fargo and the division crown returns to Springfield.

Unfortunately, the simplicity of the ‘win and you’re in’ mentality doesn’t translate to ‘easy’ in reality. In Week 1, Springfield won a close contest at home against the Freeze, 20-13 with the help of a couple of big plays. In Week 14, the Slayers will have to do much better overall and cannot count on making any big plays to win in Fargo.

The Freeze have been the ‘surprise team of 2004’ and with good reason. QB Warner is ranked 3rd in the league, HB Childs is 4th in the FIFL right behind such names as Cooper, Dumas and Blake and the Freeze defense is ranked 9th overall. HB Childs will look to reach 1000 yards rushing for the first time in team history. Slayers HB Anthony Simmons will also strive to reach 1000 yards and become the first player in Springfield history to do so.

Regardless of the outcome of this game, Fargo has a lot to be proud of this season and should count 2004 as a success and a solid building block for the future.

When asked about this week’s game, Springfield QB Wilkie Perez replied, “Fargo’s a good team..reminds me of us a couple of years ago. They have a good offensive punch with both Warner and Childs and our defense will have to step up to keep those guys contained. We’ve been working on a few new ‘wrinkles’ for this week’s game and we’ll see how things turn out…but our main focus is to go to Fargo and do whatever it takes to win this game and guarantee our spot in the playoffs. If that means going against our normal game plan then so be it. This team is hungry and we want to win our division and carry that momentum into the playoffs.”
