Subject: Week 2, but it's already in the FORUM...

... which is way cool, once you figure it out? ROCK ON!

[editors note ] it’s far from perfect, so take it with the proverbial grain of salt. Check into the FORUM… it is, IMHO, the better option for this league? Mick Jaeger-like 'Lord, I MISS YOU' to GM Miguel of Dayton: NICE DRAFT! Good luck this week and this season! Having fun again, unencumbered by the confines of a real job. ALAS, this can’t last long, so enjoy!

Fargo (1-0) at Honolulu (0-1)

GM John Murphy inherited a middle-of-the-road team in 2003: never really accomplished much, not an over abundance of talent. Playing in the Great Plain Division, the Freeze were naturally low in the pecking order topped by perennial powerhouse Black Hills Machine. His tutelage forged a breakout 8-6 2004 season. But this team fell back to a mediocre 6-8 last season. Fargo started this season the way a team destined for the play offs should: a 24-17 conquest of division rival Black Hills. Murphy likes QB Kurt Warner. His numbers are similar to other successful QBs in the FIFL. HB Clinton Childs powers the running game. WRs Alfonzo Browning et al feature out-a-control SP and HA. The O line is built to prevent sacks. The kicking game shouldn’t lose any games. The DL is above average, with a flaw: DT Jason Washington would block kicks from the DT2 position? (This GM does not know the ’97 game!) LBs stack up with the upper 3rd in the league. DBs are good, but lack that je ne sais qua come crunch time. Why GM Kevin Fillman [EDITORS NOTE: oops, it’s Josh Stein’s website!] (Checked out his web page?) is associated with this league is in intriguing mystery. It’s even more intriguing when every one knows the daunting travel difficulties this team endures. Regardless, y’all need to understand that this is a league of winners. There are no better players to compete against out there. Lose here, it’s no disgrace. Win here, feel good about your bad self: you done good. The Hurricanes tack to port RE QBs. This veteran GM realizes that QBs are a bit part of a great team… a refreshing attitude in this ‘gotta have the greatest QB to win’ league. Fillman is building a formidable team for the future. Hidden behind the fading venerable Quentin Cradle (HB) and James Mormino (FB) is talent soon to make a splash. WR Eddie Brown was a crown jewel of a pick up. The O line will feature SP and EN… again, vets mask the future. Ks are adequate. D line is adequate, but suspect? LBs OK, looking for the younger players to develop. If a game ever needs to be saved by the secondary (LOL in the FIFL) this unit is 1st rate. Make the call? HON wins by a FG. HON 24 FGO 21.

Steel Valley (1-0) at Portland (1-0)

Despite its’ up and down ways, Steel Valley is a proud franchise. GMs have come and gone, but the theme has always remained: WE WILL BE BACK! The Smash now have Josh to hold accountable. This team tanked itself after the 5-9 2001 season. The resulting rebuilding process has been slow, but effective: 5-9 in 2004, 6-8 in 2005. QB Hohensee, once a darling in some GMs eyes, has been tossed around the FIFL like a K at a DL convention. He remains an enigma, because he never lived up to expectations at any stop he’s been. Look close: he’s improved enough with the proper PPPs to be a top notch FIFL QB this season. Wouldn’t like to live with the backups. RBs Leotis Flowers blossomed last season, and FB David Rueter adds to an adequate RB combo. WR Calvin (XMAN) Schexnayder (Arnold’s cousin?) will be the key to this teams success this season. Projected to be a much larger portion of this seasons offensive production, he remains the lone indomitable target for Hohensee this season. IF XMAN gets it on, the opposing team is done. The defense has the necessary bits and pieces in place. CB Cecil Doggette is on everybody’s wish list. How often will the XMAN and the rest of the team jell? Don’t bet against them often. This is an up and comer we expect to make the play offs. GM Joe Scanella came on board opened eyed with a solid back ground, took on pertinent data, and conquered the league. He proceeds this season from a position of strength. The Prowlers know they have the best team in the league, and they play up to that. There is a certain swagger to teams that know they are for real. Witness what this team has to offer B4 and after games this season: because you need to absorb what this entourage has to offer: it’s superb. Make the call: Portland smashes Steel Valley: POR 34, STV 7.

Lincoln (0-1) at Springfield (0-1)

Lincoln GM Neil P can’t win. He signs QB John Fourcade. He fields a decent team. Yeah, it was on the road, but 21 1st downs, 418 TNY usually is enough to get it done, even with 2 picks. The team seems perennially out of sync somehow. Every position has decent talent. Maddening! Springfield GM T.C., on the other hand has posted 4 winning season in a row. QB Wilkie Perez plays pitch and catch with WR Larry Perrymond. Defense even Make the call? SPR 27, LIN 21.

Colorado (1-0) at Black Hills (0-1)

It all came together for GM Christian and the Wildcats last season. Team shows no sign of letting up this season. HB Ricky Blake is getting a lot of press. Ball control offense and in-your-face defense. Can you say repeat? Machine GM Jason has the best track record in league history. QB Mike Armour gone, but it’s the system that makes this franchise. Keep on eye on TE Eric Alford. Make the call? BLK 20, COL 17, OT.

Dayton (1-0) at Louisiana (1-0)

Series need no intro or debate. Make the call? LOU 27, DAY 22.

Austin (0-1) at Mobile (0-1)

Austin GM Ian is entertaining when he chooses to feed us a post or 2. His team is all business. Austin (nee Utah) has never had a losing season under his reign. The goal this season has to be winning in the division. Ambushed after switching conferences, the Knights were treated rudely by the Gulf Division. They finished 8-6, same as the division leader, but went 2-4 in the division. Austin always drafts well, and the team reflects that. Look for some one to give up talent and or picks for any 1 of the 4 QBs on the roster… all can win in this league. GM Mike in Mobile is traumatized this season. The Seagulls would normally be scanning the league looking to add veteran talent. Now, they look to move excellent groomed talent while plotting for future seasons. The team didn’t look good in week 1, but they will some games. Next season, watch out! Make the call? Pick ‘em.

Wichita (1-0) at Mississippi (0-1)

GM Jim S guided the Warlords to 10-4 season and play off berth in the tough Great Plain Division. Eventual winner Colorado invaded and took Wichita out in the 1st round. Pieces remain in place for a repeat performance. Mississippi GM David has improved the defense enough to make this team competitive if the aging but excellent offense performs anywhere near its’ past form. Make the call? WCH 31, MIS 24.

Madison (1-0) at St Louis (0-1)

Madison GM Paul is yet another of those never had a losing season since joining the league. Nothing much is changed this season. GM Joe J has no where to go but up. Solid QB in Andy Kelly, excellent WRs in Odems and Stallworth and O line is OK. Solid D, aligned well for TC as a team. Make the call? MAD 20, STL 23.

Billings (0-1) at Fort Wayne (1-0)

No GM in Billings, but team got a lot younger this season. RB Wesley Cates is a Michael Cosey clone, and that’s not bad. Fort Wayne GM Mike B (not to be confused with Mike Banghart in Mobile!) tries to win games with his mouth. Of course, that never works, so the team has to bail him out. Mike Armour at QB, Lincoln Coleman at HB, decent sure-to-get-better WRs and a quick durable O line fuel hopes for the offense. Defense appears adequate. Make the Call? BIL 17, FWS 24.
