I've been reading the PHB. I haven't read it all. I kind of read in fragments. Pretty much whatever I feel like learning about at that particular time. I must say that I am harboring mixed feelings about it. There are many things that I like about it. For instance, I like the generalization of all the ability bonuses. It makes things much simpler and also opens doors for certain skills, such as Weapon Finesse. I like what they've done with a lot of the characters, though I'm not sure if I like the ranger. As with 2nd edition, without kits there is little room for flexibility. And of course all the fore mentioned things I like. But I do see a downside which has yet to be discussed. I think that they may have changed a little TOO much. I mean, if 2E was that bad, why do we play it? Changing things too much means there is a lot more to learn, and also much more room for mistakes. Some may not be seen right now and some are. I will make a prediction. There will be a lot of home rules. There will be a need for more supplements, though I've heard that WOTC said there wouldn't be. Some little things I out and out disagree with. Take the climb skill for instance. The check is now made against strength. It now seems to be a better suited skill for a warrior then a rogue. I'm sorry, but that is not realistic. Being a person who enjoys rock climbing as a hobby, I know that dexterity is much more important than strength when it comes to climbing. I have personally witnessed a prime example at the Ren Fest. AnvilX was there with me as well. I was watching people attempt to climb the castle wall trying to win 20$ by getting to the top. I watched all types of men try this. Many of them were large, strong men. None of them made it. The only person I saw make it was an extremely petite young lady who did it barefoot. Not only did she do it, but she did it like it was nothing. I guarantee that any of those men could have beaten her in arm wrestling if you get my point. He he. I was going to try, but after watching her I couldn't bear to be shown up:) I've always thought Dexterity to be an underrated ability in Dnd. They did not fix that problem in 3E. If anything, they made it worse. Also, as Marz said earlier. In order to end up with the character you want, you have to plan it all out ahead of time. The game is very stingy with feats in the beginning, (unless you're a fighter) so you have to know what you want your character to develop into. I still think that all and all, it may be a little too stingy with feats. Also, being a dedicated two-weapon fighter, I have to mention how strict the game is on that style. The way the rules dictate, there is absolutely nothing you can do to get rid of all the penalties. If your not a ranger or a fighter, it's not even worth attempting to use the style. Also, for WebRPG purposes, it is much more difficult to handle multiple attacks as they are all different bonuses. Add two weapon prof. and two different swords and you would need a substantial number of dice buttons to accommodate that. In fact, I don't think my character sheet would support it. There are other things, but I have typed enough. I'll save them for another time:) Just food for thought.
