Animated gifs are seldom if ever justified. They're fun to make, but not fun for the reader to look at. The only use for them that I can think of is in banners and on the rare occasion that you want to draw attention to something that, for whatever reason, you just *can't* have up near the top of the page.

Mozilla has a setting in which you can specify that animated gifs will loop forever, once, or never (under Preferences->Privacy&Security->Images). I usually keep mine set to loop an image only once. It's a great comfort when confronted with epilepsy-inducing flashing images.
