I know a lot of great artists online who use animation in their banners and post signitures, and it can be quite effective. One of my favorites is Jullie Dillon's which has a picture of her main character, totally stationary for about ten seconds, then...he blinks. It's very subtle and smooth, so you almost miss it, but it's also kind of creepy. That's certainly not the same as all those moving parts that make your eyes hurt while you're trying to read the text, though. I know what you mean.
