Well there are some light hard woods. Pine, Cherry, and Mahoganie(sp?) are all hard and light if you get the right types (Pine can be hard or soft so be careful). All 3 are commonly used in screen doors so they need to be light but still hard because they get banged around so much. Go to a lumber yard or Home Depot or something and just ask them for something that's hard but light and easy to carv.
