do NOT use Balsa wood for any kind of 12in accessory for the following reasons:

1 - it's soft and easy to work with, sure. but it won't hold an edge. it'll ding easily.

2 - IT'LL BREAK EASILY!! Balsa, at the thickness you'd want it to be, is only slightly more dense than styrofoam. And put any kind of lengh into it, it becomes long and flimsy. It'd snap in two with no trouble. Balsa isn't durable wood. It floats but it's not built to last.

3 - at the thickness and size you're looking for, wood would probably be no worse, weight wise, than plastic. so just go with hard wood already! or plastic. Wood would sand better, but plastic would smooth better because there's no grain.

you might want to hit a costume shop or something, look at plastic knives, find one about the right size, and retool the blade?
