Subject: Nelvana and Kodansha have officiated their partnership....

After coproducing a new season of Babar, and Pecola [it's a Cute yet intelligent preschoolers show] and Nelvana licensing CCS and Medabots, Nelvana have signed a deal to get first dibs on licensing Kodansha's new projects. And part of that is more coproductions.

Why is this a good thing? Well, though some bitch and whine about the the CCS dub, really, it wasn't that bad, and Nelvana runs it in the right order on their own network Teletoon, with less cuts on the eps they dubbed only for it.
Medabots is pretty good for what it is, and they DID go and get the subbed rights to the CCS show. Most companies would of simply dubbed it, and never bothered with subs as it's a "kids show" [ala DIC's Sailor Moon eps].

This also means one cool thing--- More Anime brought to Canada, and counting as Canadian content. Nelvana ha produced a lot of quality shows, and many aren't just for kids. Teletoon has had adults only shows since it began in 1997. Asides from more kids shows, teen and adult shows are also a coproduction possibility. Especially with Nelvana's MTV deal.

And, as seen above with the CCS thing, they'll probably give it a subbed release if there's fan demand. Also, coproductions mean that said anime shows will also suffer less edits, as Nelvana will have a say in production [doesn't mean shows will be dumbed down, just that NorthAmerican audiences will be kept in mind].

It's a good thing, anime fans.
All it needs is a bit of Cheesecloth, and a velvet ribbon tied around it. I like Good Things.

CORUS ENTERTAINMENT'S NELVANA AND KODANSHA LTD. ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO DEVELOP CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING

Agreement Includes Future Co-Production Deals And Distribution Rights For Television Programming

(Las Vegas - Toronto, January 22, 2002) - Corus Entertainment's Nelvana (NYSE: CJR, TSE: CJR.B), one of the world's leading animation companies and Kodansha Ltd., Japan's largest publisher, today announced a formal partnership to develop new children's properties together. The agreement expands upon their already existing relationship, which produced such successes as the co-produced "Babar's Adventures", as well as Nelvana's acquisition of "Cardcaptors" and the current Fox Kids hit program "Medabots".

Under terms of the three-year partnership agreement, Nelvana will be given first look on all Kodansha projects for possible co-production or acquisition of distribution rights for non-Asian countries. Nelvana will also co-produce at least one Kodansha property during the term of the agreement. In addition, the partnership grants Nelvana the rights to handle the distribution of Kodansha's popular series of interstitials, "Naughty Monty", in the English language territory.

"Nelvana's and Kodansha's working relationship has proven to be a tremendous success," said Michael Hirsh, CEO of Nelvana. "Committing to this proven formula over the next three years will allow us to continue to create high quality children's programming that consumers all over the world can enjoy."

"We are thrilled to expand upon our alliance with Nelvana," said Masaru Yamano, Senior Vice President of Kodansha, Ltd. "With our publishing expertise and Nelvana's ingenuity in building brands for a worldwide audience, we look forward to bringing many more joint projects to the marketplace."

KODANSHA LTD.
Kodansha is a privately owned company, which has been run by consecutive generations of the Noma family. Seiji Noma, the founder of the company, published his first magazine, Yuben (Oratory) in 1909. This was followed in 1911 by Kodan Club, a monthly collection of kodan or traditional stories from which the company was to take its name. The success of Kodan Club assured the future of the new company and, by the mid-1930s, Kodansha had taken a leading position in the magazine publishing industry through the publication of nine magazines. The success of the book publishing program led the company to establish important business relationships with major publishing companies around the globe. Under the present leadership of Sawako Noma, Kodansha has set itself new goals in the ever-changing media industry and continues to play a dominant role as a leader of Japanese book and magazine publishing.
