Subject: Stephen Tyree - Update

Excerpt from the Houston newspaper. It says Tyree is 6'5", which may be a bit of a stretch. Strake Jesuit currently has a 7-5 record. Although I doubt if their competition is as tough as that of Chaminade (Zach Evans), it is still harder than that faced by the average Bucknell recruit of the past. Tyree, by the way, leads his team in scoring, rebounds, steals, and assists.
--------------------------------------------------------

"Playing with five guards on the floor, the Strake Jesuit basketball team tries to run foes off of the court.

Using an array of half- and full-court traps to create turnovers, the Crusaders like their defense to dictate their offense.

“When we get in our set offense, we like to spread the floor and create driving lanes so that we can either get to the basket using our quickness or pitch it out to one of our outside shooters,” said Crusaders’ assistant coach Ray Marshall. “It definitely can create match up problems for the other team.”

The Crusaders have plenty of outside shooters who can fill it up. Junior guard Seignogar Paye and sophomore guard Trent Rogers n just back after an injury n provide much of the outside firepower.

However, Strake relies on senior guard Stephen Tyree to get the team going. Tyree leads in scoring and also in rebounds, steals and assists.

“As he goes, we go,” said Marshall. “You can always count on him for all those intangible things you never see in a stat sheet. He just always seems to have his hand in every play.”

At 6-feet-5-inches, the four-year varsity player prides his work on the boards.

“I think I bring a good rebounding presence, and that’s my focus,” said Tyree. “I’m lengthy and quick, so I have size on most of the guards I play and I’m also bigger than most of the post players out there.”

Teams know they have to focus on him if they want to stop the Crusaders, just for the fact that he creates so many opportunities for his teammates, not only himself."

Looks good to me...

Do you think he's our most highly touted recruit ever?

That's a hard question to answer. He might well be the best athlete we've recruited (as Eric has pointed out before). However at this point, based on some of the things I have read, I think his outside shooting is not real strong. Hopefully as he concentrates on hoops 12 months a year, instead of alternating with big-time football as he has in the past, his shooting will develop.

It is good to see that the recruits seem to be coming from stronger programs, who play against tougher opponents, than most recruits of the past. In addition to Strake Jesuit, Evans' Chaminade plays a VERY tough schedule, and Behan's Notre Dame program plays a pretty tough schedule as well. Based on what I've read, Behan will probably play mostly the 4, Evans the 3, and Tyree can play the 2 or 3 or maybe the 1 depending on the circumstances - although he is not a prototypical PG, that is what he often plays at Strake Jesuit in Houston.

I would love to groom Tyree as a 6'4" PG to learn one year under Badmus and then start. Further, he could be a better version of Badmus defensively. Best Defender at the 5-Star Camp......Not required to be a jump shooting wizard either.

That's a nice thought. It wouldn't be his shooting that would hold him back, just whether he could handle the ball well enough against pressure and run the offense properly. As far as future PG's go, Griffin has done a good job at that spot when necessary and the jury is still out on Justin Castleberry, who entered the program with good credentials and got some good press from Flannery in pre-season.

I think they are bringing him in to replace Chuck. You look at Vegotsky as a perfect fill in for Bettencourt at the 2. Abe will be around for one more before Griffen fills the point after that. What is potentially missing next year is the 3. A big athletic guard who can rebound. When Chuck is at his best, he is a prototypical 3, and it sounds like Tyree brings that blend in his game as well.

Next year's starters (and believe me I more than happy to not look past this year):

1 Badums 2 Vegotsky 3 Tyree 4 Mastropolo/Brown 5 McNaughton

You think Tyree will crack the line up that quickly?

I think Mastropalo is a liability but that has been hashed out before.

Vegotsky gets right by Griffin?

Does Castleberry begin to take minutes from Badmus?

Last comment about next year, I don't see why we would not be the prohibitive League Favorites again.

I could definitely see Tyree seeing time at the 3. However, given the complexities of the Bison defense and offense, I think the betting odds would favor Brown being the starter, especially at the start of the season. It is possible Zach Evans may also factor into the decision (and maybe John Clark,if he makes a recovery from the foot problems).

Based on the write-ups and the stats, I think both Tyree and Evans at this point are not great outside shooters but both seem to be very athletic players who can play D and rebound.

>>>Last comment about next year, I don't see why we would not be the prohibitive League Favorites again.<<<

The Bison could still be favorites but I think "prohibitive" is way too strong. HC will be good, losing only Hamilton and Hyland and probably regaining Doherty. Thomas and Simmons could both be all-league next year. The key for them will likely be the kind of job Clifford does in the middle. American will return everyone, along with a freshman or two who will probably help. Lehigh will only lose Juco Joe (who has only played in one game thus far) and an OK center. They will also have a frosh or two who will help, so their key might also be if anyone can do the job in the middle. Colgate and Navy should also be stronger. In sum, a much more balanced league.

For the Bison, the obvious issue will be who replaces Lee. None of the candidates will provide the offense that he does now, since none are good outside shooters, and don't forget Lee has been the leading Bison rebounder over the past 1.5 years as well as playing tough D. Although Tyree is a great athlete, I don't see him walking in and instantly replacing Charles Lee. The Bison, as things stand right now will be easier to guard since Mastropaolo has no outside shot and the likely replacements (Brown, Evans, Tyree) also do not have Lee's outside shot.

For now, though, I'm happy to just watch this year's team.

Crusaders not ready to fall back
Led by guard play, Strake stays in playoff chase

By JEREMY RAKES
Chronicle Correspondent

Strake Jesuit might not be as tall as some of the other schools in District 19-5A, but the Crusaders have speed and can shoot the basketball. Thanks to their outside touch, Strake sits in the middle of what looks to be a five-team race for three playoff spots.

"We don't have the height that other teams in our district do," said Strake Jesuit head coach Wayne Jones. "We rely a lot on our guard play and our speed, and that has worked out well for us. Right now it looks like it's going to be between us, the three Alief schools and Cinco Ranch for the three playoff bids, so we know we have to step it up and play our best basketball in order to get in."

With over half of district play left, the Crusaders know they still have a lot of basketball left to play, but Jones knows the team has come a long way since the beginning of the season.

"The team has progressed very well," Jones said. "They are really enjoying the fruits of their labor right now. The kids have worked really hard and bit into the system."

Jones said the one area where the Crusaders have improved the most is shooting the ball. "When we shoot the basketball well, we play really well, but when we don't, we struggle," he said. "We have improved a lot in our ability to shoot the basketball this season, and that is one of the reasons we are in the hunt for a playoff race."

But with plenty of district still left to play and a match-up with Westbury Christian still on their schedule, Jones knows his team has to show up to play every night.

"This district is very competitive, and if you don't show up against every team, you are going to get beat," Jones said. "We want to make the playoffs, but we are looking at going out there and playing hard night in and night out right now. We don't look at any one team and say we have to beat them because any team can beat you in this district."

Jones said the Crusaders have jelled nicely this season, and he thinks the Washington Examiner Tip-off Classic is where they started to put it all together.

"We went to D.C. to play in the Classic, and we did some things up there that helped us become the team we are now," he said. "We were away from home, and it was just the team. This is a group of young men who believe in each other and the team. We don't worry about the scoreboard but how play because we know that as a result of how we play, the scoreboard will come out in our favor."

Part of the reason for Strake's emergence as one of the teams to beat in District 19-5A is senior Stephen Tyree. Tyree, a 6-5 guard, has signed a letter of intent to play at Bucknell next year.

"Stephen is an incredible player and leader," Jones said. "He has done all the little intangibles that makes a player and team successful. He will play any position on the floor from one to five, and he will guard anyone on the floor. He does the things that don't show up in the box score. One of the main reasons we are where we are right now is Stephen."

With the playoffs in their sight, the Crusaders know what they have to do.

"I am looking for us to have more consistency," Jones said. "We have to consistently play hard, and I think if we play more consistent every night, we will be one of the three playoff teams in this district."
