From game notes for 3 games in Lee College Classic this past weekend:

In Varsity basketball this weekend, the Crusaders journeyed to Baytown to compete in the Lee College Tip Off Tournament. The tournament was set to start with pool play first, then bracket seeding. In their first outing, the Crusaders were in a match up against Port Arthur Memorial. The Titans were averaging 77 points a game until this meeting, only netting 21 by half. Unfortunately, the Crusaders could only net 9 by half, and a total of 12 by the 3rd. In the 4th quarter, the shots that the Crusaders couldn't get to drop suddenly did. Jesuit turned around the whole game in a matter of minutes by going on a 18-4 run, to close the game and then by continuously scoring throughout the 4th to get the score down to 1 (44-43) with 9 seconds left. The Titans scored on a long 2, and as Jesuit came down they had to heave a long 3 that fell short. Final was 46-43 Titans. Leading scorers were TYREE w/17 pts. and Paye w/12 pts.

In the second round of pool play, the Crusaders were up against the Panthers of C.E. King. Though the Panthers were athletic, Jesuit had learned from it's earlier game, and came out aggressive against King. Hard defense dictated the tempo as the Crusaders got out early to put any doubt to rest. Final was 69-48 Jesuit. Leading scorers; TYREE w/ 27 pts. (also 16 rebounds, 7 steals) Paye w/17 pts.

Going into the Championship game, Jesuit would be matched with the Magnolia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs presented a team with shooters, and fundamental players. The Crusaders got an early lead, only to see it wiped away by the Bulldog's big post players and outside shooting. At half, it was evident that both teams were a mirror of each other, by the controlled tempos, and hard defense. As the game see-sawed back and forth, Coach Jones called on Paye for inside post scoring, then came back with Tyree for the same, as the Crusaders tied the game late in the 4th at 36. . And on a hard baseline drive, Austin Claunch drew in defenders, only to dish an assist to waiting wing-man Dane Nielsen, who took a floater only to have it swish thru for 2 for the game winner and the championship. Final was 38-36 Jesuit. Leading scorers; TYREE w/16 pts. and Paye w/11 pts. The Crusaders finished the tournament 3-1, and improved their overall record to 7-3. Due to his hard, consistent play throughout, The Silver Division All Tournament Player was given to Stephen TYREE.

From TexasHoops.com:

When you're a talented two-sport athlete in the state of Texas, you're often faced with a decision on what sport to focus on when it comes to the next level. Stephen Tyree was in that boat, and the athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard from Strake Jesuit in Houston knew he had to make the choice. He was getting some nice recruiting attention for his exploits on the football field, but couldn't pass up the immediate opportunity he'd get on the hardwoods.

"Stephen signed with Bucknell," said Strake Jesuit head coach Wayne Jones. "It came down to a few schools and he decided on Bucknell because one, academics, two, they showed great interest in him throughout the recruiting process, and three, they're an up-and-coming program. He felt there was an opportunity for him to go and play basketball at a high level."

Had he waited until the spring, Tyree may have very well signed with a D-IA football program. Schools such as Northwestern, TCU, and Iowa had shown varying levels of interest in him during this past season. "He had some schools recruiting him for foootball - he was an all-district receiver and defensive back," Jones said. "But his heart was always in basketball, so that's what he decided to go with."

Since re-joining the team after Strake Jesuit lost in the playoffs, Tyree has made an immediate impact. "We've played six games so far and five with Stephen, and he's averaging a double-double," Jones said. "We played in a tournament in Washington D.C. this past weekend and he was honorable mention All-Tournament. He just makes all the big rebounds, the big steals, the big shots when you need him to - he does everything for us." (note: tournament teams were st benedicts (NJ) - d hurley; towson catholic, cardozo (ny), holy cross(ny), dunbar (DC), national christian, good counsel)

As Tyree gets his basketball legs underneath him this year, expect even bigger things out of him for Strake Jesuit this year - and beyond. "I think that Bucknell is getting themselves a tremendous steal," Jones said. "Stephen doesn't have a lot of structured basketball until football season is over with, so they saw the potential in him once he gets that extra four months of work in. With that, I think he's one of the top 50 or 75 players in the country."

One more article, from late August. One item of note is that "Tyree says whether or not he'll get to play both sports in college will play a big part of his decision making...He says: "I really want to do both. If a school lets me do both that would be beneficial."" (I wonder if that is still an option or if part of the scholarship agreement is to play just the one sport.)

Getting looks for both football and basketball after earning district honors in both, Tyree doesn't favor one over the other and hopes to get the opportunity to play both at the next level. The talented athlete has received interest on the gridiron from the likes of TCU, Northwestern, and Iowa to name a few and has an offer from BUCKNELL for basketball.

"I've been getting interest in both sports," he said. "For football I would say Northwestern sends the most but I also get some from TCU and Iowa. I don't have any favorites right now, I'm keeping my options open for everything. I want to play both sports in college and I'd hate to decide for one over the other, it would be a very hard decision."

Tyree says whether or not he'll get to play both sports in college will play a big part of his decision making, however he points out that the school's academics will linger on his mind more.

"The school has to have great academics," Tyree said. "That's the number one thing on my mind. And like I said before I'm really split on football and basketball and I really want to do both. If a school lets me do both that would be beneficial."

As a point guard on the hardwood Tyree directs traffic with the best of them and on the gridiron he says his best strength is simply his instincts.
