From TexasHoops.com:
When you're a talented two-sport athlete in the state of Texas, you're often faced with a decision on what sport to focus on when it comes to the next level. Stephen Tyree was in that boat, and the athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard from Strake Jesuit in Houston knew he had to make the choice. He was getting some nice recruiting attention for his exploits on the football field, but couldn't pass up the immediate opportunity he'd get on the hardwoods.
"Stephen signed with Bucknell," said Strake Jesuit head coach Wayne Jones. "It came down to a few schools and he decided on Bucknell because one, academics, two, they showed great interest in him throughout the recruiting process, and three, they're an up-and-coming program. He felt there was an opportunity for him to go and play basketball at a high level."
Had he waited until the spring, Tyree may have very well signed with a D-IA football program. Schools such as Northwestern, TCU, and Iowa had shown varying levels of interest in him during this past season. "He had some schools recruiting him for foootball - he was an all-district receiver and defensive back," Jones said. "But his heart was always in basketball, so that's what he decided to go with."
Since re-joining the team after Strake Jesuit lost in the playoffs, Tyree has made an immediate impact. "We've played six games so far and five with Stephen, and he's averaging a double-double," Jones said. "We played in a tournament in Washington D.C. this past weekend and he was honorable mention All-Tournament. He just makes all the big rebounds, the big steals, the big shots when you need him to - he does everything for us." (note: tournament teams were st benedicts (NJ) - d hurley; towson catholic, cardozo (ny), holy cross(ny), dunbar (DC), national christian, good counsel)
As Tyree gets his basketball legs underneath him this year, expect even bigger things out of him for Strake Jesuit this year - and beyond. "I think that Bucknell is getting themselves a tremendous steal," Jones said. "Stephen doesn't have a lot of structured basketball until football season is over with, so they saw the potential in him once he gets that extra four months of work in. With that, I think he's one of the top 50 or 75 players in the country."
