IN SODOM'S GATE
Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2 Peter 2:6-8 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
To sit in the gate was an honor bestowed on the wisest in the Old Testament Bible times. It was a place for business to be transacted and judgment to be meted. It was a place of arbitration and the settling of disputes. It was a position of honor for Lot, the nephew of Abraham, to be allowed to sit in the gate of Sodom.
Lot had left his uncle when their herds had grown too large for them to feed together any longer. The land could not sustain them both so Abraham gave Lot a choice of the land he would dwell in and Lot seeing the abundance of pasture and water in the plain "pitched his tent toward Sodom".(Gen. 13:12)
Lot epitomizes so many today who would put a good job and good salary over the spiritual needs of self and family. The people of Sodom were exceeding wicked people. They were given to homosexuality and many other vises. Lot moved his family into this environment without fully weighing the cost. We see in the end that the cost far exceeded any benefit that Lot had gained by his ill advised choice.
Peter said that his righteous soul was vexed by the filthy conversation of the wicked. Now that word "conversation" does not mean talk and communication. It does include that but it's truest meaning is lifestyle. We hear that a lot today, don't we. The lifestyle of Sodom was a death style just as much as the filthy wickedness of the fornicators, sodomites and lesbians are today.
Lot did not participate in the evil but his eyes and ears were constantly assaulted by what he saw and heard. Not only was his sensibilities under attack but his children's and wife's were also. There is a great lesson here for those of us who would live for the Lord and not be affected by what is going on around us today. First we need to understand that although we are in the world we are not to be of the world. (Jn. 17:15-16) The world has changed drastically and there is more to entice and tempt today than ever before. We can embrace these things or we can "Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls"(Jeremiah 6:16 )
Television, movies, internet, violent video games and sex education in our schools have destroyed the morals that this nation once stood for. What we and our children are seeing cannot be "un-seen". What our ears are hearing cannot be un-heard. They affect all of us and we are becoming desensitized to the immorality that is so pervasive in society today. Our children and grandchildren use words that used to be only heard around the roughest of people. Even they would stop their vulgarity in the presence of women and children but not any more.
Queers are out of the closet and Christians are being shoved in. Political correctness and "hate speech" are destroying the biblical values us older heads were brought up in. We must boldly take a stand against such and teach our children what is right and good and teach by example to stay away from the immoral and wrong. Safe sex is married sex carried out in manner in which God intended when He said "be fruitful and multiply".
Lot saw all the evil and immorality and heard all the filthy and abominable language of Sodom and turned his head. He should have packed his bags and got out before his family was so affected. God told Abraham that He would spare Sodom and the cities of the plain if just 10 righteous people could be found in Sodom. The evidence points to the fact that there was only one and he was sorely vexed by his sojourning in Sodom. When the dust had settled Lot had lost his family down to his two youngest daughters and the only concern they had was they had no man! What a legacy! Two children by incest and and the rest of the family incinerated accept for his wife who was turned into a pillar of salt.
Folks, I'm afraid that is where we are headed today.
