CHAPTER 46
Genesis 46:1-7 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. 3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: 4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. 5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: 7 His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
Israel heads south with all his family but before he would enter Egypt he stops by Beersheba to offer sacrifices to God who has been so gracious to him that he might see his "dead" son again. Jacob, by faith, recognizes the providence of God in the deliverance of his son and his elevation to second in command in Egypt. Jacob does what we all should do when God has blessed us. We should offer worship praise and thanksgiving. Early on in the bible it is through the act of sacrifice that the greatest praise was given.
During the night Jacob hears that voice of God that he has heard before and it calls his name twice. This is often the case in the Bible when God wants to really get the attention of the one He is calling out to. In Genesis 22:11 it was "Abraham, Abraham" when God stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. In Exodus 3:4 it is "Moses, Moses" from the burning bush. In 1 Samuel 3"10 it was "Samuel, Samuel" when Samuel was chosen by God to take Eli's place for not stopping his two wicked sons. In Acts 9:4 it was "Saul, Saul" when Jesus revealed Himself to Saul and called him to be the Apostle to the Gentiles. In each instance God had something special for the one whom He called.
"I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:" God is nation building in the fires of adversity and persecution. He is hammering out Israel on the forge of the slavery that Egypt will bring them into. Jeremiah 11:4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God: Israel as a nation was formed in a great struggle in which she was forced to depend on God. In similar fashion America came out of the fires of religious persecution and a yoke of servitude to England and her intolerant king. Both nations were founded on the Word of God.
So all of the sons of Jacob with their wives and little ones set their faces toward Egypt knowing only that God had promised that He would one day bring them out. God had first told Abraham of this great even and now He has revealed to Jacob personally in a vision in the night this same thing. It is with these assurances that Israel enters Egypt.
