CHAPTER 50
Genesis 50:1-14 And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. 4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. 6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. 7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. 10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. 12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: 13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. 14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
As the curtain comes down on the Book of Genesis we come to the last chapter and it is a chapter of death and mourning with forgiveness and compassion sandwiched in between the two deaths In the beginning of the chapter we have the death of Jacob and the mourning of his sons for him. In the end of the chapter we have the death of Joseph. The chapter begins with a funeral and ends with a funeral in Egypt which is a type of the world. There is a distinct symbolism here that should not escape us.
First the events happen in the 50th and last chapter of Genesis. 50 is a multiple of 5 and five very often in the Bible is the number associated with death. In Genesis 5:5 the first man to ever die a natural death as a result of the wages of sin dies. There were 5 wounds in the body of Jesus. 2 in his hands, 2 in his feet and 1 in his side. Jesus garments were parted to 4 soldiers and they gambled for His robe so as not to part it making 5 pieces of garment. (John 19:23-24) When David went to the brook and picked out the smooth stones with which to slay Goliath, how many did he pick up? Wasn't it 5? (1 Sam. 17:40) The altar of sacrifice was 5 X 5 cubits in length and width. Every sacrifice was put on an altar of 5 by 5. The 5th month of the year is associated with the distress call. Mayday! Mayday! It is the sos (save o save) and is broadcast on the international frequency of 500 kilocycles. In the New Testament the 5th book is Acts. In the 5th chapter and 5th verse Ananias drops dead. 5 verses later his wife drops dead. In 1 Cor. 5:5 we see the carrying out of the sin unto death. These are just a few of the many of the instances where the number 5 is associated with death. I realize that most people that study Bible numerology assign the number 5 to grace but dear reader let me ask you this. How did your grace come? Did it not come by DEATH? Jesus had to die for you and I that we might live. Sin brought death but the grace of God brought life to all who would come to the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world. (Rev. 13:8)
It is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgment. (Heb. 9:27) The Book of Genesis shows this quite well. It begins in the perfect garden when man commits sin and dies spiritually. It ends with the funerals of two of the greatest men in the Bible. Jacob, a sinning scoundrel, whom God named Israel and indeed the nation of Israel came from his loins. It ends with one of the greatest types of Christ found in the entire Bible.
When the funeral procession of Jacob made its way out of Egypt northward to the "cave of the field of Machpelah" I venture to say there had never been such a sight up to then and may not have been since. Such was the stature of Joseph before the Egyptians that a great part of the people of Egypt went with Joseph to bury his father. Joseph was looked on by the people of Egypt as their savior and indeed during the famine he was. Joseph not only fed the people but evidently judged and ruled as 2nd in command in such a way as to garner respect from his subjects as well as all the leadership in Egypt. "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. " (Proverbs 22:1)
