CHAPTER 42
Genesis 42:1-8 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? 2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. 3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. 4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him. 5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. 7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. 8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
As the famine spread Jacob and his sons begin to realize they were going to have to do something in order to feed not only themselves but also their flocks and herds. Word had spread of the full storehouses in Egypt. This going down to Egypt because of famine is reminiscent of Abraham going down to Egypt when there was a famine in Canaan in Genesis 12. In Abraham's case I believe it was a test of faith. In the case we have before us it is a matter of God moving the Children of Israel into Egypt to set the stage for His mighty deliverance and to destroy Egypt as a major power during that time. Egypt was to wane and Syria and Babylon were to ascend.
In verse 1 Jacob is in effect saying; "Why are you all standing around looking at each other and asking what are we going to do? There is corn in Egypt so get on the move and go buy some that we might live." Ten of Jacob's brothers prepare their donkeys, fill their sacks with enough money to buy and head to Egypt. Joseph's full brother Benjamin is kept behind because Jacob is very protective of him since Joseph disappeared.
In verse 6 we brought face to face again with prophetic events. Joseph's 10 brothers come before him and bow down to him. This fulfills the "near" prophecy of Joseph's dreams and he realizes it. There is yet a "far" prophecy that is at least 1,500 yrs. future and and another that is more than 3,500 years in the future. Joseph as a type of Jesus recognizes his "brethren" but they don't recognize him. Jesus came knowing who He came to but they did not know Him.
"Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them". (vs.7) Jesus made Himself strange to Israel in that they were expecting a great military king who would deliver them from the Romans and bring in the Kingdom.. They thought they knew everything they needed to know about the Messiah to recognize Him when He came. Jesus came as a lowly carpenter's son and as a preacher and prophet. God purposely sent Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus into Egypt and then when they came back He sent them to Galilee. When Nicodemus stood up for Jesus before the Pharisees they said unto him: "They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet". (John 7:52) They had no idea that Jesus was born in Bethlehem at the time. Because of the prophecy of Micah they could not accept Jesus coming from Galilee. Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. This is why Herod had all the male babies under two years old killed. It was known by the Jews that He was to be born in Bethlehem. (See Matt. 2:1-16) It evidently never occurred to the learned elders of Israel to ask Jesus where He was born.
Jesus will one day come suddenly to Israel and meet with them face to face and then they will be converted as a nation. Ezekiel 20:33-38 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: 34 And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. 35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. 36 Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. 37 And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant: 38 And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Because He didn't meet their expectations He was "strange" to them. When Jesus comes back and reveals Himself to them it will be as the prophecy states. They will bow before Him. They will know Him only when He reveals Himself to them. We will see more of this as we go on into the chapter in greater detail.
