Genesis 24:54-61 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. 56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. 61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
If the story of Rebekah and Isaac is allegorical of Jesus and the Church then we see in these verses, and some of the previous ones we have looked at, the drawing of a person to Christ to become part of the bride of Christ. The opportunity for Rebekah to become the bride of Isaac has come through the visit of Eliezer. As we have stated earlier. Isaac is a type of Christ, Eliezer is the type of the Holy Spirit and Rebekah is a type of the "bride of Christ". At this point Rebekah is "under conviction" as an unsaved person is drawn to become a Christian. The offer has been extended and she is well aware of the benefits of uniting with Isaac in matrimony. The downside is she will have to leave family, friends and the country she has known all her life. This is what the Christian is asked to do. We are asked to forsake all and follow Christ. I realize that many are in Christian homes and have been brought up in the Christian way but there are far more who are called to Christ that are rooted and grounded in the things of the world. Not only are they rooted but they love where they are rooted.
The plea from family is wait a while, you don't have to rush into this. Eliezer, on the very next morning after his arrival and presentation of his mission says "time to go". Family said what's the rush? Give her a few days; at least ten for her to have her last flings and enjoyment of what she is leaving behind. This is the way the devil hinders people from becoming Christians when the Spirit is drawing a person to Christ. He will say what is the rush. There is plenty of time. Go ahead and finish sowing your oats then you can become a Christian.
If Satan can get you to put off your salvation today then chances are he can get you to put it off the next time the Spirit calls you to Christ. Many has been the person who said tomorrow or as Felix said to Paul: Acts 24:25 And as he (Paul) reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. There is no record of Felix ever accepting Jesus or for that matter ever getting another invitation to come to Him. If that is the case then without doubt Felix is in hell wishing he had answered the call the day the Spirit of God spoke to his heart. Agrippa fared no better when he told Paul "Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian." (Acts 26:28) Almost persuaded and later have put countless numbers in hell because they did not act on the conviction that came on their hearts at the call of God on their lives.
At Eliezer's request of immediacy they insisted that Rebekah tell them she was ready to leave. "We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth." Rebekah is called: "Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go."
This is the equivalent of the personal confession that you are saved and belong to Jesus. Rebekah turned her back on her world and set her face toward Isaac's world. We as Christians are to let the world know that we belong to Jesus and we are turn our backs on the world as we knew it before we were saved. Again it should be noted that Rebekah became Isaac's without coercion.. Of her own free will she accepted the testimony of Abraham's servant and accepted the claims of Isaac on her life. She had never met Isaac and had only the testimony of Eliezer to go by but that testimony was such that Rebekah suddenly found herself desiring to be with Isaac enough to leave her father, mother and brother knowing she would never see them again. Again the Spirit of God never makes us accept the call nor does He try to coerce us into receiving that testimony. We must act out of total free will.
Rebekah leaves with the blessings of her family and follows Eliezer to Isaac. We are to leave the things of this world and look toward heaven and Jesus. Sarah in the spirit of Colossians 3:2 set her "affection on things above, not on things on the earth."
