Being fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to meet Mr.(for a few seconds) and Mrs. Reagan as a youth I began my memories of our U.S. Presidents fondly. It was with such awe I was able to meet a lady of such grace, and what excitement to meet him! They took the nations youth seriously and were fervent believers in education. It was for an educational award given by the state that I was able to meet the Reagans in 1987. With that as my starting point, I began to learn what I could about our President (amazing undertaking for a 10 year old) and seeing Pres. Reagan on television almost made me feel like pointing and saying, ' There is a good friend'. It was his face in commercials begging kids to stay off drugs that made me actually say no. I literally respected the man. I know he had quite a few people that didn't like him for whatever reasons political or not, and aside from democratic, republican or whathaveyou point of view... from the point of view of a youth in the US who hadn't really lived long enough to develop the tendencies to judge a person upon anything other than their character, I saw him as a friendly, caring, humorous, and humble man who took the reigns and had the nerve to try to make changes in a country that needed them. He was personable... someone I felt I could just walk up to and shake his hand. I didn't feel that way about George W. Bush, Clinton, or Bush Jr. I never felt admiration seeing any of them on television. President Reagan took time for the people: even the young ones that many overlook. That made such an impact on my life, made me proud to be able to vote when I turned 18. Knowing I would have the chance to choose a man such as that to lead our country. I was too young to really remember the details or specifics of his Presidency, but as I said it was him as a person that made the impact on me. I am very saddened to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to Mrs. Reagan in her loss. I recall them holding hands pretty much the whole time during the awards ceremony when they were sitting together. Damn .. if only to have another President that makes a child in our country so proud. Presidents need to stop worrying as much about how the rest of the world views them... and more about how our nation views them. For the president should be here for the people.
