Chapter 84
Des picked up the phone and called Jackie. Jackie was at home reading a book, Symphony was spending the night at Jamal’s place. She picked up the phone
Jackie: Hello?
Des: Guess who got married?
Jackie: That Presley chick and Nicholas Cage?
Des: No, Cat and John
Jackie [surprised]: Which Cat and John?
Des: OUR Cat and John
Jackie looked around her in surprise
Jackie [stuttering]: Wh..wh..WHAT?!
Des [laughing]: My feelings exactly.
Jackie: How’d you find out?
Des: That chica just called me and told me her and John got married a few minutes ago
Jackie: I still can’t believe her. She didn’t even give us time to shop for her or throw her one hell of a bachelorette party! I was so looking forward to the cake!
Des laughed
Des: Me too, I swear when I see that girl I’mma hit her with a sack of rice!
Jackie: lol, but ain’t it a little too soon?
Des: Yeah but you know there was drama about her kissing some frat guy called Joshua and I know that shook John a little and I think it kinda led to it
Jackie: But even so, John shouldn’t even talk cos if he has forgotten, that little on and off ish he had with Letonia did not skip Cat’s memory did it? Its all good and cool for him to play hurting boyfriend but when he was running his own game, he never thought to get married to Cat as a means of proving to her she was the diamond in his sky, now she kisses some guy who probably don’t mean much to her and he starts getting scared? Please!
Des: I thought the same as well, but Jackie this has to be between you and me, lets not rain on that girl’s parade, she told me she’s in love right now and I think that’s her business, we just gotta be there for her and try and bring her down to reality gently. And speaking of which, her mom doesn’t know
Jackie: She is going to blow a gasket when she finds out. She never really seemed to care much for John before and getting married to her child behind her back and without her permission won’t be honeying her up even more!
Des: Tell me about it. Anyways we’ll talk more when she comes back from “consummating” her marriage and I’ll have her give us the nitty gritty of whether it was worth the wait. So how are you, Jamal, and my godbaby doing?
Jackie smiled
Jackie: we’re all fine, Symphony is with Jamal for the night, he wanted to take her and show her off to all his people
Des: he’s come a long, long way since the ‘Kelly’ days
Both of them shuddered
Jackie: yeah and I’m extremely proud of him and proud of myself that I could get over the hurt and allow myself to be happy. Speaking of which, how are you and Lami doing?
Des’s face soured
Des: not so good right now. It’s that whole him having a baby with that girl that really freaks me out. I really thought Lami and I would be first time parents together instead, he went half on a baby with Krys behind my back and that still hurts. He brings the kid around and tries to have me accept him but I just can’t. Nothing against the child personally, its just the history behind his birth that really got me wired up. He’s over at hers playing loving daddy
Jackie: I kinda understand your feelings, but think of this as a practice run when you have babies together
Des: I’m not even sure I want to have his babies
Jackie [shocked]: WHAT?
Des: think about it, I’ll never have Lami all to myself ever again because that kid will always be in his life. It’s not a practice run where when he gets tired of playing ‘daddy daycare’ he can always hand the baby back and say okay back to my family. That baby will always be in our lives and when it comes down to choosing who takes priority over, I know Krys could pull the ‘pathetic I’m all alone’ act on Lami and with that f***ing conscience of his, he’ll put her and that kid over me, and I don’t think I can do it. All other crap I can take, forgive, and move on, but when a baby is involved, it is a mistake you can never rectify. I may have his diamond but do I really have his heart? And pushing that kid all up in my face won’t make my pain go away faster, it even makes it worse.
Jackie was silent after this and she did see the logic in Des’s words
Jackie: I understand however by having you accept the baby it would be easier for you to get over it and move on.
Des: Easier said than done.
Jackie: But D, you know you need to and you know you have to and you know what? I know you will.
Des gave a big sigh.
Des: I know, I know. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.
Jackie: Aiight then and remember you’re a Christian you’re supposed to be forgiving. I know you are but you love that guy and you can’t afford to let him go and Des, for your sake, let go and let God take control. Look Jada Pinkett and Will Smith made it work, make it work for you too.
Des: thank you Sister Mary Margaret
Jackie: lol okay then I gotta go
Des: thanks J, really appreciate it and you’re right I’ll let it go
Jackie: that’s my girl. Bye!
Des: bye!
Both hung up and all night, Des thought about what Jackie had said to her and she cried and cried but by morning, she knew what she was going to do.
8am, the doorbell rang
Krys: Lams can you get the door for me
Lams: okay
Lams got up from the couch he’d slept on all night and although he’d been up for over an hour, he still felt tired, maybe cos Jason only slept 4 hours during the night. He was rubbing his eyes and yawning as he went over to the hallway and opened the door. He blinked in surprise
Lams: Des?
Des smiled at him
Des: were you expecting someone else?
Lams [quickly]: Of course not, what are you doing here?
Des: I came to say hi to you and the little dude, but can I come in first?
Lams was surprised he still couldn’t believe it, so he stepped aside and Des entered. She was wearing a fitted lilac top with an asymmetrical cut at the bottom, blue combat trousers and blue timbaland boots for girls, she had her hair up with a parting in front which let some of the hair fall to the side of her face.
Lami: You look very good
Des: thank you
She turned to face him
Des: I know there’s a kid in here but I gotta do this
She pulled him closer and gave him a good kiss. Lams was still stunned by the change in attitude.
Lams: you sure you’re okay?
Des: Never been better
Both went into the living room where Krys was standing bouncing Jay up and down
Krys: Lami who was….
She stopped when she saw Des and her heart started to beat. Maybe this was the final showdown where her ass would really get kicked. But to her surprise
Des: Hey Krys, how you doing
Krys [utterly in shock]: F..fine and you?
Des: I’m good. One reason why I’m here is that I came to talk to you two.
All three sat down, Krys and Lami held their breath expecting the worst. Des took a deep breath before talking
Des: I know the past year or so has been difficult for us and no offence, on me especially being the fact that I did not expect what happened to happen. However I am willing to let bygones be bygones cos I have realised I cannot spend the rest of my life trying to undo an incident which cannot be rectified and I cannot keep holding grudges against you two. Krys, you will always be in Lams life because of Jason and I cannot change or continue to hate that fact and Lams I know loves me more than anything, but I cannot change the fact that he is being good father who cares about his son, I am willing to accept all that and say we all start from a clean slate, no more drama.
Lams and Krys were shocked to the core. Des looked at them expectantly
Des: So what do you say?
Krys: Wow, Des I don’t know what to say, just that I can’t believe you’re this nice to me after all I’ve put you through and I know I don’t deserve it, and yes I apologise again and I am willing to be cool with you again.
Lams: Baby…I don’t know what to say…
Des looked at him
Des: Its okay.
Lams pulled her closer and kissed her, Krys looked away smiling, still shocked about Des. Soon Jason started crying. Des and Lams broke up their kiss and looked at Jason who began to cry
Des: Can…can I hold him?
Lams and Krys looked at each other in complete surprise
Krys: Y…yeah sure
Krys gave Jason to Des
Des [to Jason]: Hey lil dude, how ya doing? Now will ya stop crying otherwise I won’t take you clubbing with me
She started making faces at him, Jason began to quieten down and he began to laugh
Krys [to Lams quietly]: how’d she do that? He’s never done that before
Lams held his hand up in wonder
Des began to bounce him up and down
Des: C’mon lil man, I know you just ate…oh you need to be burped? Aww baby J need you to tell me what you want…oh it’s the burp huh? Okay then, one…two…three lets go!
She put him on her shoulder and began to burp him until he burped, but he burped a little milk onto her shoulder
Des: babe forgot to tell ya, watch the fabric. Keep that up and I’mma dry clean it and send you the bill okay?
She bounced Jason up and down who began to laugh and smile, he loved being carried by the beautiful lady with the smiley face and the hair. Lams and Krys were watching in complete surprise.
Des: Oh Krys, Baby, got something to tell y’all, Cat got married
Krys: To who?
Des: To John
Lams and Krys: What??
That’s it, I’mma stop there ppl, just to put in a mini appearance, Angie thanx for saving my face, u’re a diamond princess.
