I can't think of any texts off-hand ... will see if I can come up with something, but how about using the "If You Lived at the Time of ..." series. I own most of the series and there are at least 4 books covering most of the topics in Patchwork Primers, Vol. 1 - Native American tribes, riding in the Mayflower, signing the constitution, the Revolutionary War, traveling in a covered wagon, the Civil War and Underground Railroad. There may be others. They are set up nicely in a sort of Q & A fashion with some illustrations accenting the topics.
