As school let out, I found him on the bus ramp by himself against a pole just watching everybody. “Travis, hey T, what up?”
He smiled at me and gave me a hug. “Hey what’s up Ashanti? Can I help you out?” He asked looking me up and down. Aight, you see he call me Ashanti. Everybody says I look like her but a little darker. Well to explain this, Ashanti is my cousin right. She use to baby sit me sometimes when she came over here to California, which was rare unless it was in the summer or during family reunion time. Now, she doesn’t come around that much no more with her being the “R&B Princess” and all. She’s been pretty busy. So, anyways to end THAT story, back to Travis. He really gets on my nerves when he calls me Ashanti.
“Travis, I gots a deal for ya”
“Oh yeah?” he smiled giving that curious look, “School me”
“Alright, check it. You know I got this lil group going with Shay and them? Dynasty?”
“Yeah, I heard about it”
“I’m the lady rapper, ya know. I got skills fa sho, but I just got this idea right to do a two way right like Redman and Method Man thing. I was wondering if maybe you’d like to do it with me. I mean you can scoop our song and help me out. I’d really appreciate it. So…” I asked looking at him. He start rubbing his chin like he was thinking on it. I knew I just felt he’d say yes. “Aiight, I’m in,” He replied giving me his smile. I just looked at him real quick just to check if maybe he was running game. “You serious?” I asked.
“Yeah ‘Shanti, fa sho. When this going down?” He asked. I just ran up to him and hugged him. I was so happy. “Um, let’s see, you available like, right now? Lie, right when I go home?” I asked. “Yeah, you got a car?”
“Yeah”
“Alright, I’ll follow you,” He suggested and we were on our way to my house.
“Mama! Darius! I’m home!” I yelled tossing my stuff to the couch. Mama came down the stairs with a smile. I looked at her shocked. “Mama, what did you do to your hair?”
“You like it? I went with Racheal to this salon today. How it look? Nice?” She asked touching it trying to model it. I touched it myself.
“Mama, that is cute! Ow, I want my hair done!”
“Um, I can do it got you baby. Anytime without costing a dime”
“Ah Mama, you go and spend money to get your hair done. That is so cute. Shay coulda done that for you. You tryna’ look young”
Mama’s hair was twisted all the way round died all the way through with two shades of brown, her natural hair color, and a dark burgundy color. It was tied in a high pony with the twists ending in the middle tied together. It was so cute! I had to get my hair like that one day with rhinestones. “Shay wasn’t around was she? I had so much fun today. I went shoppin’ and bought some groceries, I ran into my ex boyfriend. I had a blast. Boy, I felt eighteen again. I even bought Ashanti’s cd. It’s really good,” Mama told.
“Mama, you coulda just borrowed mines”
“I wanted my own. I gotta represent on my own for my kinfolk. You know what I’m sayin?” She said laughing. She was getting too crunk for me. I just shock my head. Mama is always so lively when she get crunked up and shop and stuff. I guess Daddy sent money today. “Oh, Mama, this is Travis. Travis, this is my mother Mrs. Woods,” I introduced at Mama shock his hand.
“How you do?” She asked her bracelets making music on her wrist. They are right, Mama and I do look like, but she’s just lighter. I get my tone from Daddy. Darius gets his from Mama, but he looks like Daddy and I look like Mama. That’s what’s funny. She’s not much taller than me, maybe a good 5’8’’ or so. Daddy’s 6’2’’.
“I’m fine just came to do some work with your daughter here”
“What work?”
“Mama, we working on a new deck for “Boy Please” we doing for the talent show. It’s gon’ be tight. Yall gon’ love it,” I told her going into the kitchen pulling out a box of Teddy Grahams and two 20 oz. Sprite. “Oh okay. Well, I’m going on up to my room and rest for a while. I got that lasagna in the oven so yall can eat whenever. I am beat. It was nice meeting you Travis,” Mama said going up the stairs. We started getting settled at the table. “You too Mrs. Woods. You sleep well now”
“Oh I well. You bests believe it,” Mama said laughing.
“So, where’s the cut at? I wanna see what we workin’ with here,” He said all of a sudden getting kind of like…serious. I guess he loves what he does. I pulled out the notebook and turned it to the section where it said “Macy’s Raps” and let him read over it putting a beat to it. He started nodding his head. “Girl, this is hot. See, right here, you need to slow it down because this verse is tight and you want people to pick it up. This part right here, you can speed it up because it’s a good verse, but it’s needed to be like a Bone Thugs way ya know? I like the whole song though. It’s blazin’. You guys workin’ on this and it could be a good demo”
“Ah thanks Travis. So, where would you come in at?” I asked tapping my pencil when Darius walked in dropping his stuff at the door about to run back out again. “Darius? Darius!” I called.
“What? What?” He said in a hurry.
“Where you going? You got homework don’t you?”
“Man, Jamal and Gary fighting. I gots ta help my homeboy,” He said running back out. I looked at Travis and we followed him. It was funny to see when them boys be fighting, but I knew Gary, and I wasn’t about to help Darius go out there fighting. Darius ran over to the middle of the street and punched Jamal in his back. Travis and I ran over there too when Jamal turned around and his Darius in the mouth. I went crazy. “Don’t be hittin’ my brotha’ punk!” I yelled hitting him on his head and kicking him in the knees. “Macy! Macy!” Travis called to me trying to call me back ot my senses when he pulled Gary out the fight and pinned him on the ground. Jamal was much taller than me. He grabbed me by my wrist and tried to turn me around, but I ran into Darius and Darius ran up to Jamal and slapped him all up in his face. Mr Robinson, our next door neighbor, ran over and pulled me away. “Don’t me hittin’ my sista nigga! I’ll hurt you nigga! You betta watch out boy!” Darius yelled when Mr. Robinson ran up and pulled him away from Jamal. “Yeah punk. You betta’ recognize!” I yelled breathing like I can a marathon.
“Eh, you don’t live around here young man you need to-”
“Don’t put your hands on me old man! I’ll check him, his punk ass friend, you and his ugly sister!” Jamal yelled.
“You the one ugly you black spook!” I yelled trying to pull away from Travis.
“Bitch, shut up”
“Eh, eh, eh, I don’t wanna hear that kind of talk around here. Macy, yall go and stand by the house!” Mr. Robinson ordered. We started walking back to the house and Gary was with us. “Man, I’m gon’ get in trouble,” He whined.
“For what? Man, he was messin’ with you. You just retaliated,” Darius told him pulling off the clip on tie. “Man, I can’t be fighting. You know my mama. She will be all on my case trying to send a nigga to boot camp and ish. I ain’t got time for that. I’m gon’ try ot go live with my aunt”
“Man, we had that nigga. Macy had our back,” Darius said giving me some dap.
“Ummhmm, cause nobody mess with my brotha’ and his friend and sho’ ‘nuff not me because I will break they neck!” I yelled loud enough for Jamal to hear. Mr. Robinson had sent him away. His so called friends that was with him sure didn’t have his back. We sat out on our front porch for a second. Travis started laughing. “What?” I asked.
“Yall crazy man. Yall neighbor all up on this, yall crazy”
I started laughing. “Boy, we use to fight all the time when we was younger, huh Darius?”
“Sure did. We whooped everybody”
“Naw, we got our asses whooped by them twins though. Lacy and her mean ass brother Tracy. Them two was some demon seeds”
“Oh yeah! Man, they had us”
“Man, that fight was fun,” Gary said laughing. “I better head for home before my mom’s be like, “you three minutes late!” and all that mess,” He said getting up. Mr. Robinson started walking our way giving up that you-should-know-better look.
“Now, I can’t believe what kind of behavior I just witnessed out there. You two should be ashamed! I know yall should know better. I don’t even want to know what the fight was for and I won’t tell your mama, but you just better let me not see it on this street again. I’m getting too old for this, ya hear me?” Mr. Robinson explained. He ain’t never changed.
“Yes sir,” We said in unison. Travis was just crackin’ up.
“Ummhmm, well tell ya mama I said hi. She sent over some nice flowers, cookies and fruits to the house for us. Tell her Sasha and I thank her. My daughter had got the door when she came over”
“Yes sir. I’ll tell her when she wake up”
“Alright. Yall stay out of trouble,” He said walking off. Gary gave Darius some dap and headed on home himself. I sighed looking at Darius and we bust out laughing. I hit him on the head getting up. “And don’t be fighting no more!”
holla holla back!!!!!
