Author: Aislinn
Subject: Living on a Regret part 1

Location: The Forest
Time: Just about dawn

Aislinn, ome of the three Feral tribe leaders, jolts awake from the same piercing howl that has been waking her up early for the past 2 weeks. It has been driving her crazy. Why did she keep hearing it? Whatever it was, it was no animal Aislinn could recognize. She was going to have to ask her sister, Jenna, and her best friend, Mara, for their opinion. Maybe she’ll address it in the next meeting. After a few grunts and curses, Aislinn gets up and walks to the window of her tree-house bedroom. One good thing about the howls is that it wakes her up in time to see the coming of a new day as the sun rises through the trees. But today was different.

“Oh great it’s raining…” Aislinn moans as tiny trickles of water drip on her head from the ceiling. Suddenly a bolt of lighting flickered across the sky and a roll of thunder sent Aislinn jumping off the ground. “Alright, this is really gonna suck.”
She wouldn’t have mind the rain on any other day but today was her turn to lead the hunters to find food. Because of the rain, the hunters usually don’t end up finding any animals to kill because they are usually hiding and seeking shelter from the storms.

“Looks like it’s gonna be a fruits and berries diet today.” She hated to see the animals die anyway, but she understood that it is necessary in order for the Ferals to survive. Whenever the Ferals killed an animal, a ceremony was performed for that animal after that meal. The tribe member who represents that animal performs the ceremony.

Shivering from the cold of the storm, Aislinn closed her tree branch shutters and pulled down the shade made entirely of leaves. She got dressed in her usual black single strap shirt reminiscent to the one Jane wears in Tarzan of the Apes. Aislinn always thought the shirt seemed appropriate for the forest-dwelling tribe. After fumbling around in the dark for her favorite black pants, Aislinn lit her beeswax candle to somewhat illuminate the room.

“Where the hell are my pants?” Aislinn was really searching now. Then she remembered, she had washed them in the lake the day before and hung them out to dry. “Shit. I guess I better find something else.”

She looked through the only bag of clothes she owned to find something that isn’t too stupid looking. Just her luck, there were no pants in the bag, just skirts and shirts. She then remembered the fate of each of her other pants one by one. One was ripped basically to shreds after she was attacked by an angry raccoon. Another met a similar fate only it was with a thorny bush. The third one was a nice leather pair; that one was drenched in mud after she tripped and rolled into the muddy bank of the river. She washed it until it become tattered and basically disintegrated.

“Why am I so stupid? Better yet why do I have such bad luck?” As she said that, Aislinn grabbed a black and red plaid skirt and put it on. Still shivering, she grabbed her hooded cloak, which was part of a Halloween costume she made before the virus, and wrapped it around her as she put on her knee length leather boots. It was probably around 6:30 a.m. now so the hunters should be up and ready to go in about a half hour...
