Aislinn hated waiting, even if it was for only half an hour. Waiting with nothing to do always led to thinking; thinking led to flashbacks, which led to her parents. Unlike the other tribe members, Aislinn and her older sister Jenna lost their parents two years before the virus hit. Their parents were archaeologists and often went on dangerous expeditions. Their last trip was to Egypt, which also was the last time Aislinn and Jenna ever saw them again. They were never found again and eventually they were just simply pronounced dead months later. Aislinn always felt responsible for their disappearance because before they left, she got in an argument with her parents and shouted, “I wouldn’t miss you even if you both disappeared from my life!" Aislinn regretted those words the second they were spoken but never worked up the courage to apologize. Jenna continuously tried to explain to her that it was just a coincidence, but Aislinn still lives on that one regret.

After what seemed like an eternity with her thoughts, Aislinn started towards the meeting place at the center of the camp. Once there, Aislinn was happy to see that despite the bad weather conditions, everyone seemed to look their best and was greeted by nine smiles. The hunting party usually consisted of ten tribe members and a tribe leader; however one member, Leona, had just given birth so she had a greater task as a mother to deal with. Mara, Aislinn’s best friend, then came running to the group shouting, “Sorry if I’m late. I figured you guys needed someone to fill in Leona’s shoes.”

Aislinn smiled and pulled her cloak tighter around her and said, “Nice to see you all here, despite the storm. Well, it looks like it gonna be pretty bad today so we should get started immediately. I wanna be back in time to help the others get ready in case there’s a flood. There will be no hunting today, so we are foraging. Remember your plants; don’t go around picking poisonous berries and killing half the village now. Also we need to stay close. I don’t wanna have to find you because you strayed to far. Maybe be best if you pair up. Got it?” With that the hunting party shouted, “Right!” and they paired up and started off toward the dark wet forest with only a few lanterns to light the way.

Aislinn paired up with Mara and Zev, the best tracker and hunter of the tribe. Zev was the least liked guy of the tribe, because of his sarcasm, but since Aislinn and Mara knew what it was like to be hated, they usually took his side. Grinning Zev replied sarcastically to Mara, “Oh why do I have to be paired up with the Wicked Witch of the West?” Unconsciously, Mara clenched her fist to punch him, but Aislinn grabbed her and shook her head. Since Zev was in front of the two girls, he didn’t know Aislinn had saved him from sudden unconsciousness. So he continued on with the childish remarks as he turned to face Aislinn and pointed at Mara saying, “Despite the fact that you are pretty bitchy, I think you could do much better than her, Aislinn.” This time Aislinn was the one throwing a fist but Mara didn’t stop her. Through the rain you could hear Zev’s screams. “Ow! Hey, I was just joking! Come on Aislinn I’m sorry. Oh no, Mara! Don’t join in! Alright I’m sorry!” But one final blow in a certain spot sent him graveling on the ground in pain.

“I said… *cough*… I was sorry…” Hiding a smile with her hand, Mara replied, “I guess I didn’t hear you.” Aislinn and Mara burst into laughter. Their fun was cut short when they heard an eerie howl, the same howl Aislinn has been hearing for the past 2 weeks. Quickly getting up, Zev clenched his hand-carved spear. Aislinn and Mara suddenly found themselves each gripping one of Zev’s arms. Liking the attention, Zev said, “Uh…Ladies…you might wanna stay close behind me the rest of the way…I mean as a precaution.”

Aislinn quickly realized that she was acting childish and it was her duty to be a tribe leader so she must act like one. “Alright, I don’t know what that was but I think we’d better get back to the village. It’s already been awhile and I’m sure we have enough food for today anyways.” Just when Aislinn was about to give the “return to camp” call with her wooden flute, she heard a “distress” call coming from past the bushes that were in front of them. The trio made a confused glance at each other and ran through the bushes. They ran for like ten minutes and stopped thinking they were made a wrong turn, and heard the “distress” call again, this time much closer. They followed the call until they saw the rest of the group and noticed that they were surrounding something. “Maybe a dead animal,” Aislinn thought.

“What’s wrong? Is someone lost? Hurt?” Zev asked. Aislinn, Mara, and Zev made their way through the party to see what it was that they were looking at. Lying in front of them wasn’t a dead animal. There were two humans, a male and a female, on the ground motionless, maybe dead. “Please tell me you didn’t kill them,” Aislinn said with a serious voice. Two tribe members stepped forward, “No, we found them there like that. We haven’t touched them I swear.” Zev and Mara moved closer to the bodies and looked at each other. “Hey Aislinn, this one is alive still,” Zev replied. Mara nodded and said,” And so is she.”
