Subject: volume cuts out in reverse

Can someone tell me why the volume on my radio cuts completely out when I have the car in reverse? The radio display is still on. Just no volume. It stays out until after I shift it out of reverse. The problem just started a few days ago. Also, shifting from drive to park, the volume cuts out for around 2-3 seconds. My shifter is on the column and my car is a 97 Taurus GL.
