Subject: Transmission Failure

How long should I expect a replacement Ford transmission to last, or should I ask how long a quality transmission should last to get an accurate answer. Also does anyone know the warranty on a replacement Ford transmission? I was told two years by the dealer. I replaced the transmission on my Taurus in 2000 after it suddenly died on the highway leaving me stranded with my two children. This car is now our spare car and we have put 10,000 miles on the new transmission. Last week I lost all transmission fluid and was told by the dealer that there was a crack in the transmission, which was changed to a leak in the seal, when I picked up the car. The fluid does not seem to be leaking now (maybe only slightly and I cannot see it) and the dealer told me to occassionally check the fluid, drive the car, and don't worry about it. The warranty was up 6 months ago and I was told they could not repair the seal as the whole unit would have to be replaced, which is not worth it. How can a "quality 1" transmission have problems with only 10,000 miles on it and do I have any recourse since the "warranty" is no longer valid?
