Denise,

It's really hard to diagnose something like this over the internet. However, an engine is basically an air pump, and if there is a restriction preventing air getting in or getting out, the engine will feel like it is stalling even though it is getting gas.

This is just a guess, but I'd say either you have a very plugged air filter, or you may have a catalytic converter that is plugged. The burning smell may be the fuel not burning completely and ending up in the converter.

I'd first inspect your air filter. You could even remove it and see if the problem goes away (but only drive it for a very short time). You may want to replace it anyway if you haven't for awhile.

Otherwise, a mechanic can check for exhaust restriction with a vacuum gauge, and from that determine if the catalyst is plugged.

On other wild thought. Does the tachometer jump all around while it is trying to stall? If so, you could have a bad distibutor cap or rotor. This cause the spark plugs to fire at the wrong time, and that can cause the tachometer to jump around like the tip of a fishing pole with a fish on the line. The misfire can dump raw fuel in the exhaust and you can get a bad exhaust smell.

If you can provide some more symptoms, I might have more ideas.....good luck, Glen
