I'm having a similar problem and have decided to look at the PCV, this is the positive crankcase valve. very simple and inexpensive to replace. If someone pulls it out for you all that you have to do is shake it to test it. If it rattles, it's good. If there is no sound when you shake it then it's bad. It can cause a car to act like your description and it also can act like a vacuum leak when it is bad from what I understand.
