Mike,

Welcome back – nice to hear from you – it’s always good to respond to someone who’s done some thinking and searching before they post, and post with specifics (and good punctuation/grammar to boot!!). I’m happy the see that you’re still driving your ’89 – great year and classic design/engineering.

Per the 89 manual for the carb 5 speed, I believe the valve you’re describing is the Thermovalve A (let’s call it TV-A so I don’t have to type so much!). If so, it should have a #17 hose coming off if it, and that hose goes to the air cleaner (fresh air). It also has a #18 hose to it, and that one goes to the choke opener. The TV-A moves with engine coolant temperature to open the choke valve. Hose #19 goes to the fast idle unloader (F-I-U) among other things, and is the vacuum supply to the TV-A. The TV-A also moves to allow the F-I-U to function properly. If you are squeezing #19, then you are cutting off the vacuum to the fast idle unloader, and the choke and the F-I-U stop fighting each other and the engine runs fine. I think what is happening when the engine drops to 1200 and runs poorly is that the choke opener gets confused and I think it closes the choke too much.

If it were me, I’d replace the Thermovalve A. It is a thermostat type arrangement (wax motor) and like a thermostat, these have a finite life. Unless it is terribly expensive, I’d replace it. I think you mentioned earlier that the choke coil heater was okay, and since it runs fine when warm, I suspect the choke is coming off correctly.

Item #13.

Simply put, the TV-A is a three way valve that controls both the choke opener and the fast idle unloader. It has three ports in it, and as the plunger inside moves, it starts to cover the ports. Since you are having distinct problems with the fast idle and the choke, I’d lean toward this valve...

Hope this helps – having a manual in front of me but trying to explain this with words is tough. Sure you can’t find a manual on Ebay???

Good luck! Glen
