When Honda goes to a supplier like Fram and say they want to buy filters from them, Honda sets that standard and Fram provides the product to those standards. Oil filtration is probably the most important thing to an engine's life, and it there is one company who is adamant about it's engine's reputation, it is Honda. They would not accept anything from Fram that does not meet their own standards, and with the volume of Honda, Fram will buy whatever paper, put in whatever new equipment is needed, etc. to get it done right.

I don't think you have to worry about where Honda buys them from - they will do the job.

As far as Fram quality, I don't have any data to say they are any worse or better than other aftermarket makes. We'd all be pretty surprised if we knew who makes what filters. There is a lot of re-labeling or private branding that goes on at filter manufacturers - I've seen it firsthand.

What I am more disappointed about is that my filter wrench (cap style) will no longer fit!!

Also, I'm betting Honda figured out that with everyone changing their oil so soon anymore, they don't need the extra capacity. They have also probably realized that their engines are not producing as much wear debris as before. So, the filter media isn't asked to do as much and the part can be smaller. They may also have a new vehicle out there or in the works that requires a smaller filter due to packaging, and they changed the size to maintain a common filter across many different engines.

Just a guess on my part....Glen
