Hi again!

My 86 Accord LX (385,000km!) is my baby...the problem is she's got a dangerous little thing going that I need an opinion on before I go and spend $200 on a "possible" diagnosis at our one and only local repair shop. Here goes:

Headlights. Yup, they work....MOST of the time. The problem, specifically, is while on the highway (and of course we only see this at night time!), 30% of the time when we switch from dims to brights or vice versa, the headlights TURN OFF!!!! Then, they may flicker on again by themselves after we've begun our heart attack (remember, there's USUALLY an oncoming vehicle when we do this!), OR we'll have to turn the headlights all the way off, and on again to reset. SCARY.

The headlights also pulled a trick on me the other day. I walked back to my car from shopping to find the headlights ON...so I get in the car, only to find that the headlight switch was actually in the OFF position! I had to turn them off and on again to reset and then it was normal again.

Any takers on this one? Is it the headlight / signal "wand" going bad, a dirty switch, or???
