Denise,
I agree with Mike. Your cooling fan may not be coming on. The scenario you described where it got hot when idling, but cooled off once you were rolling again fits the "no airflow through the radiator due to no fan movement" theory exactly.
I'd first check that the fans are not coming on when it starts to overheat as Mike suggested. If they do not come on, I'd suspect the relay first, then the fan, then the wiring. I don't know where the relay is on your year, but I would suspect it is in the fuse/relay box under the hood. Find out which one it is by looking at the markings on the cover. See if the fans starts after you tap it sharply on its top with the handle of a screwdriver when the car is overheating. The relay contacts can sometimes stick, and this can jar them loose. If so, replace the relay. Or, see if there is another relay that has the same part number and swap them to see if the fans come on during an overheat.
If you know how to use a volt/ohmmeter, disconnect the passengers side connector, and check the resistance of the fan. Should be the same resistance as the other fan, or at least close.
Check the connector at the fan for looseness or for corrosion. Also, check that the fan turns easily by hand (but be careful - the fan could start on its own if the relay tells it too - use a stick or something, not your fingers).
You might also trace the wire from the fan back as far as possible. It might have gotten chafed or split by rubbing on something.
I assume you've checked the fuse for the fans? (usually a 30amp fuse, likely in the underhood fuse/relay box).
If the fans are coming on, and it still overheats, then something is preventing the heat from the coolant from being rejected to the air. That could be a dirty/plugged radiator either internally of externally. However, this is remote since driving down the road after a hot idle cools the car down.
I'd bet on a bad relay....Hope this helps....Glen
