I wish i knew which ones you have tried and didnt like, it would help me recommend something. I dont know if you've tried this but,
We are starting a series Ive found at timberdoodle. The first is The Light and Glory for Children ( discovering God's plan for America) .There are 3 books on american history covering Columbus-1860. To me they are somewhere between a "living book" and a text book, being that they have glossaries, review questions, but read more like a story than a text. Mine are thrilled with them. Its recommend for ages 9-12, which would fit a 5th grader. There are also cooresponding activity books that have puzzles, crosswords etc.. it is also very inexpencive and reproducible.
