Subject: I have a mini-Loch Ness Monster living in my front yard!

I just discovered that there is a cute little lizard living in the bushes in front of my front porch. Scott has seen him a couple of times, but this was the first time I've actually seen him. He was so cute, he looked like a tiny version of the Loch Ness monster. Well, the way it would look if it lived on land, anyway.

I hope he keeps hanging out here. Maybe I shoule leave a treat out for him. what do lizards eat besides insects?

I think lizards eat Ham. And Pie. Ham and pie. Definately. Watch out though, you might have homeless people hanging around.

Our street is good and the neighborhood is safe but a lot of homeless people do like to hang out outside the 24-hour donut shop nearby, at Sunset & Fountain. Tang's Donuts, it's called. You can also get Chinese food there.

Actually, LA has quite a lot of places that serve both Chinese food and donuts--though I've never actually gone inside any of them. What's up with that, I wonder. What's the connection? And is this an LA thing or are they in other parts of the country too? I never noticed them before.

OK, out of boredom I checked to see if there were any pictures online of Tang's, and there weren't, but I did find a pretty hilarious article about it. Really gives you a sense of the Tang's Donuts atmosphere. LOL. Apparently it's a hot spot for chess players, too. I've copied and pasted the best quotes below. If you're REALLY bored, you can read the whole story at the link below.

Late Night at Tang's
This 24-hour donut shop in Silverlake hosts chess games through sunrise. And that's just the beginning of the weirdness.

A man who gives his name as "John" is hailed by a couple of the other regulars as being one of the top players at Tang's. He says he's been playing here for six years. "This is the strongest (competition) in L.A.," John says. "Every time I come here, somebody is playing. It's always been a chess hangout."

A sign posted behind the cash register reads, "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." Considering the motley post-midnight crowd that congregates here - a mix of night owls, club-goers, homeless people and assorted fried- and glazed-dough junkies - it's hard to imagine that right being invoked.

During the pre-New Year's Eve overnight, for example, an often-incoherent man wearing high-top sneakers way too large for his feet sat down and devoured some instant soup. Pall Mall cigarettes dropped, one by one, out of the back pocket of his jacket and onto the floor. Noodles dangled down to his chin.

Later, another man arrived wearing a long overcoat, flip-flops and a derby hat. His thick black mustache was shaped like the side-view of a granite table. He stomped, stammered, swore and sang for half an hour. A pony-tailed regular wearing madras shorts successfully warned the man not to open the bottle of booze he had just flashed. That same regular later told a woman--one of only three females to sit down over a 12-hour period--that she shouldn't spend so much time staring at the demonstration loop of a video game. "This is not a cartoon," he told her. "It has no story."

Isn't that last quote the best! LMAO.

Donuts and Chineese? I'm there. I'll have to remember that the next time I'm in LA (which i have no idea when that is)

We have a number of lizards living around our house, red-heads and blue-tail skinks. I was out on the stoop about a week ago and curled my toes over the edge of the stoop. One of our red-heads must have been down below, he came up and bit down on my small toe. You know once a lizard bites down on something he doesn't like to let go, but I persuaded him with a pinch of my own behind his jaws.

Actually Glory, I wouldn't feed them. If you keep them a little hungry, they'll keep the bugs down around your house.

I had a gf in grad school who kept two blue-tail skinks in a terrarium, she used to take them out and hold them up to her ear lobes. The skinks would bite down on them and then she'd walk around like they were live earings; all this while wearing n....... well, 'nough said.

I was half-kidding about the feeding him, I think it's probably better not to. But I hope he stays around.

My backyard is very popular with neighborhood cats and urban wildlife. We've seen raccoons, skunks, and possums back there a lot. I don't mind as long as they leave the garabage cans alone.

The raccoons here are a lot nicer than the ones in San Francisco. I was really surprised at how bold and aggressive the raccoons are in San Francisco. They are not afraid of people at all and used to terrorize the neighborhood with their trash can raids. I was coming home from work late one night and I saw a pack of them running down the street. It was pretty funny. They were big too, almost like medium-sized dogs.
