I was thinking about how the last several years include wonderings toward others to say, "You're not patriotic." So when I read your note about something helping you feeling ashamed to be an American, separating yourself from other citizens, I was thinking of that as the counterpoint. Not a fan of either black-and-white side of the issue it behooved me to think what'cha really intended, i.e., Luke 23:34.
I have enough of a feeling about you that were you truly ever ashamed to be an American the border is pretty close for you to run like a rabbit (okay, drive). What I heard you saying is feeling embarrassed for others and horribly heart sad of and for these things. No more, no less.
